History is made in moments both large and small. Last week at Nazaré was certainly the former. First came the carnage of the Nazaré Challenge, where Jamie Mitchell led a collection of the world's best big-wave surfers in macking, unruly conditions. Then came the free-surf session on Thursday, Dec. 22.
Facing similar conditions as those during the Challenge, our man on the ground, Alex Laurel, wanted to bring Nazaré to our eyes like we've never seen it before. So, he teamed up with Timelapse-Media in the water, and Maquina Voadora-Producoes in the sky for what proved to be one of the most unique views of Nazaré we've seen yet.
The result is a terrifying new look at one of the world's most dynamic and dangerous big waves, starring Lucas Chumbo, Francisco Porcella, Kai Lenny, Zac Haynes, Andres Flores, Alex Botelho and Natxo Gonzalez.
When Naz lived only in the realm of tow surfing just a couple short years ago, we criticized it for being a half-wave — it appeared to cap out the back but never break top-to-bottom. Well, the psycho paddlers of today have shown us a new realm at the Portuguese beast, proving just how steep and deep you can get out there. Peep the proof above!
