Hailing from Zurich, Swiss snowboarder Gian Sutter has cemented his status as a powerhouse in the European street and freeride scene. Raised on the iconic slopes of Laax, he transitioned from a competitive national team youth to a master of heavy video parts and technical street rails. Melding graphic design creativity with raw boarding skill, Sutter continues to push freestyle boundaries.

Growing up near the mountains

Gian grew up near mountain terrain near his home in Zurich. His parents, keen skiers and mountaineers, took Gian and his two sisters on skiing adventures in the Alps. It was on one of those family trips, at the small resort of Scuol in the Engadin, that Sutter first stepped onto a snowboard. He was around five years old when he saw riders throwing tricks in the park and decided that snowboarding looked far more exciting than skiing, and a lifelong passion was born.

An early introduction to the competition scene

At 12, he joined the Zurich-based Iceripper snowboard team, travelling to the mountains with other young riders and getting his first taste of competitive snowboarding. At 15, he moved to a snowboard-focused school in Engelberg, allowing him to spend much of the winter riding at Laax. The following year, 2014, he began competing internationally for Switzerland, starting with youth-level slopestyle and halfpipe events.

Gian made his mark early, winning the Grom Men category at the 2014 Trentino Rookie Fest halfpipe competition. Two years later, he represented Switzerland at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, finishing seventh in halfpipe and eighth in slopestyle. His competitive career reached another high point in 2019, when he qualified for the slopestyle final at the FIS Snowboard World Cup in Seiser Alm and finished 10th. He also competed at the 2019 World Championships in Park City.

Switching direction to explore creative inspiration

But Gian's ambitions gradually moved beyond competition. He became increasingly drawn to the creative side of snowboarding, filming with friends and eventually putting his energy into video projects. He became a key member of Escape, a Swiss snowboard crew founded around 2016, and developed a reputation for precise, creative riding across street spots, powder and backcountry terrain. In 2022, he filmed simultaneously for Escape's Escape 2005 and Salomon's Foyer, earning the coveted ender – the closing section of the film – in Foyer.

Today, Gian is closely associated with the European film scene rather than the competition circuit. His riding combines the technical foundations of his competitive years with a highly considered approach to tricks, spots and filming. Alongside snowboarding, he studies graphic design and pursues photography, skateboarding and surfing – creative disciplines that feed into his distinctive approach to snowboarding.
