Raised in a small town in the Czech Republic, Markéta Šimková Vondroušová was introduced to tennis at the age of four and quickly fell in love with the sport. Demonstrating plenty of natural ability, she began to train five days a week and enjoyed plenty of success in domestic tournaments.
By her early teens, Markéta began to make a name for herself on the international stage. She won the Nike Junior Tour International Masters in the United States when she was 12 and made the semi-finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon in her first year as a junior.
Excelling in both singles and doubles tournaments in the junior ranks, Markéta topped the world rankings before turning professional in 2014 when she was just 14 years old. Three years later she won her first WTA Tour title and made her Grand Slam debut as she reached the second round of the French Open.
2019 proved to be a breakthrough year for the left-hander as she reached the final of the French Open without losing a set, eventually losing to Ash Barty. This made her the youngest finalist at Roland Garros in 12 years and saw her reach number 14 in the world rankings.
A wrist injury badly affected her 2020 season, but Markéta bounced back the following year as she claimed Olympic silver in Tokyo.
Markéta struggled to find her best form in 2022, but reminded everyone of her class in the summer of 2023 when she became the first unseeded ladies' singles Wimbledon champion in the Open Era, defeating Ons Jabeur in the final. She would also reach the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time and reach a career high ranking of six in the world.
In 2024, she carried that momentum into the season with a deep run to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. But her title defence at Wimbledon ended in shock, with a first-round loss to world No. 83 Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro. The setback was followed by a hand injury that forced her to withdraw from both the US Open and the Paris Olympics, cutting her season short.
Now a Grand Slam champion, Markéta will be looking for more success on the biggest stage. And with a game that suits all surfaces, we may not have to wait long before she adds to her trophy collection.
