Markus Eder has always just wanted to ski. Just like every little kid from the smallest town in the mountains, he learned to ski right after learning to walk. From that moment on, he skied as much as he could, but despite some promising successes, racing wasn’t enough for Markus. He wanted to have fun and shake up his skiing with flair and creativity and, on taking up his first pair of freestyle skis, he finally found his way.
The early days of Markus’s ski career began with a flurry of wins in national competitions in his home country of Italy and it wasn’t long before he broke out onto the European stage. His big international “explosion” took place during the Nine Knights contest 2010. Thanks to a video competition, he won the only wild card to compete against some of the best freeskiers in the world. When rookie Markus stood atop the podium at Nine Knights, it was a fairytale ending for Italy's only international freestyler.
Today Markus is a well-known skier. He changed from slopestyle to freeride, keeping his unique style. 2014 was a turning point in his career. He was contacted by MSP Films and was subsequently given a role in the movie Days of My Youth. This movie was filmed in Alaska and Markus played himself. In addition, he competed in Sochi, where he came 15th and won the title of European Skier of the Year.
In 2015 he featured in another MSP movie, Fade To Winter. This is an interesting feature film showing the passion of the skiers and their main desire: having fun on the snow. Additionally, he received a prize at the Freeski Italian Awards.
In 2016 Markus won the freeride competition at the ‘Swatch Skiers Cup’ and featured in the MSP movie “Ruin and Rose”.
In 2017 he starred in two films dedicated to extreme skiing which were presented at the Milan Mountain Festival. The first of these films, Drop Everything, was shot in Alaska and Canada with the participation of other famous freeriders and produced by MPS. The second documentary, Ushba, was an expedition to Svaneti, Georgia, to climb Mount Ushba and make a first descent on skis.
In 2018 Markus decided to take a sabbatical from shooting films full-time to compete in the Freeride World Tour. Podiums in Kicking Horse and Verbier helped him to second place overall in his debut season, but it was in 2019 that he really kicked on. Victories in Hakuba and Fieberbrunn, plus a second successive runner-up spot in Kicking Horse, saw him finish as champion with 8,700 points.
Since then he has continued to progress his sport competitively and creatively, combining contest kudos - such as his podium finish at 2025's Natural Selection Ski - with innovative films such as The Ultimate Run.
