There can be few better-liked or more respected off-road motorcycle racers than Toby Price.
The rider from Maitland, New South Wales, Australia, has a resumé that reads like a Down Under bucket list. Among Price's honours are multiple wins at the Finke and Hattah Desert Races as well as a stack of Australian Off-Road Championships and National Enduro Championships. He’s also represented Australia at four International Six Day Enduros.
In 2015 he made his first attempt at the soul-destroying, 9,000km, 14-day Dakar Rally. A stage win and an overall podium showed the world that he was someone they’d better watch, and the result earned Price a full-time seat on the KTM Factory Red Bull Racing Team.
On his return to the Dakar the following year, Toby backed up that initial promise in spectacular style, becoming Australia’s first-ever Dakar champion at only his second attempt. He’s now full-time on the global circuit, and 2016 saw him feature in a documentary of his sometimes emotional road to the top, Paying The Price.
Starting the 2017 season with Dakar, Toby crashed and broke his leg. He was back competing for podium places after just eight weeks out. A podium placement was exactly what he achieved at the 2018 Dakar Rally, with third spot ahead of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team-mate Antoine Meo and behind another KTM rider in winner Matthias Walkner.
Toby went on to cap his 2018 season in style by landing the overall title at the FIM World Cross-Country Championship by winning the final leg of the series at the Rallye du Maroc.
And he went one better in 2019 by winning the Dakar Rally for the second time, even though he was suffering from a broken wrist for much of the proceedings.
Toby won two stages at the 2020 edition of the Dakar as he claimed third place overall and looked in contention for victory as the race returned to Saudi Arabia in 2021. However, a crash during Stage 9 brought an end to his challenge.
In 2021, Toby made history by becoming the first human on earth to win the Tatts Finke Desert Race on both two and four wheels. After winning in the bike category six times, he took home his seventh victory in the buggy category of Australia's toughest off-road motorsport event.
He secured a top 10 place in the final standings of the 2022 Dakar Rally.
The following year he finished in second place overall, having missed out on victory by just 43 seconds. “To be honest, I am disappointed, we’ve come so damn far and to fall short by such a small margin is a tough one to swallow," he said. "But at the end of the day I’m going home in one piece and we got a Dakar trophy. I’m really proud of the entire team effort, this Dakar has been huge."
Toby returned to Dakar in 2024, hunting for his third bike race title, and finished in fifth place. Then, in a surprising turn of events, Price teamed up with fellow Bike champion Sam Sunderland as his co-driver to race the 2025 Dakar Rally in the Car class for the first time.
Unfortunately, technical problems put Toby out action during Stage 6, but his driving did enough to impress the powerhouse Toyota Gazoo Racing, who have singed the Aussie legend up for a tilt at winning the Dakar Rally 2026 crown once again.
