Home hero Kyle Croxall won the ATSX 500 race at Le Massif de Charlevoix in Canada to move into joint first place in the Red Bull Ice Cross World Championship, while Amanda Trunzo and JoJo Velasquez also won in the Quebec race.
The Men’s final proved to be a controversial affair, with Croxall finishing ahead of second-placed Marco Dallago. However, the Austrian was clearly unhappy about an incident in the final section of the track. The podium was completed by Canadian outsider John Fisher, who finished ahead of reigning world champion Cameron Naasz of the USA.
The Women's race was won by Naasz’s compatriot and fellow defending champion, Amanda Trunzo, ahead of Canadian riders Maxie Plante, Jacqueline Legere and Dominique Lefebvre.
"There's a difference between clean racing and foul play," Dallago commented immediately after the race. "I took a pretty good start, I tried to stay behind Kyle and in the final portion I managed to overtake him before the last turn. But he grabbed my jersey and pulled me back. I know what I felt and I know it was clearly not fair."
"If you want to call it a rivalry, do it. I don't care," said Croxall. "I felt good about this track, it was very fast, I knew it was against me at the bottom here and I messed up in the last race."
The result leaves the Men's title race with two joint leaders on 2,550 points – Naasz (three wins this winter) and Croxall (two wins). They sit ahead of the Dallago Brothers, Marco and Luca.
In contrast, the Women's final was relatively plain sailing for Trunzo, who got away early and was never really threatened by the trio of Canadian riders. Plante, the winner last week in Yokohama, couldn't pass the American, but managed to stay ahead of Legere.
Trunzo said: "I didn't know how close the others were, so I tried to keep my lines closed and to maintain my speed. I'm looking forward to having a break, to put my body back into one piece and then take it all the way to the end of the season."
