The first weekend of the Red Bull M.E.O. finals has ended with some incredible action across Supercell’s two major esports titles giving fans a great way to spend an afternoon. Both the Clash Royale and Brawl Stars finals took place this past weekend, with the top players from around the world competing for a share of the massive prize pool.
Both games offered up nail biting action and grand finals that swung from side to side multiple times. There may not have been the offline finals we all wanted to see, but when online competition can be this exciting it doesn’t really matter. You do not want to miss what went down at Red Bull M.E.O.
Clash Royale
The final of the Clash Royale came down to Nekilik161 and Bale, two competitors who were a part of some of the more interesting games throughout the tournament. Both had played aggressively throughout the competition, rarely choosing to wait until the double elixir kicked in at the one minute mark, and instead going for the win in the opening few moments of each game.
While we expected the final to start off in a similar way no one could have predicted how crazy the first game between the two would be. Whereas most games in the competition came down to a single princess tower, or even health remaining after overtime, this one almost saw a king tower destruction, before finally being settled by a second princess tower going down in crazy fashion.
Nekilik161 took the exciting win in game one after things went back and forth quite a few times in the dying moments. Bale took down the opening tower with a well timed Ram push, and even managed to further that into excellent damage onto the king tower, bringing it down to just 2229 HP before his opponent had done little more than scratch his buildings.
But Nekilik161 countered with a big push, and evened up the tower score quickly. Bale seemed undecided on if he needed to defend or go for the king tower win, so as each push stalled out both king towers sat around 900 HP. It looked like Bale had a big push coming, but Nekilik1616 just managed to hold it off and countered with a clutch push that just managed to take down the second princess tower giving him the first game. Talk about an intense way to start the final.
Compared to game one, game two was a little underwhelming with Bale taking a pretty standard one princess tower win to even up the scores. Game three was more interesting, although not in the way Nekilik161 would have hoped for. Bale took a convincing king tower win, utilising his Mini P.E.K.K.A perfectly to get significant damage onto the final tower. After the close game one it seemed that Bale had finally found his form.
The fourth game turned out to be the final one, as Bale took another win to take home the series 3-1 and become Red Bull M.E.O. champion. The final game may not have had the hype of the opening one in the series, but it did see some incredible defensive play from Bale in the dying moments to secure the win.
With that he was crowned Red Bull M.E.O. Clash Royale champion and took home a massive €25,000 in prize money for his efforts.
Brawl Stars
In the Brawl Stars competition it came down to an interesting battle between the well known Spanish team QLASH, who had found a lot of success in the world of Brawl Stars, and the lesser known German team Wave, who impressed throughout the competition, showing how Red Bull M.E.O. can bring out some incredible battles between established stars and newer talent.
Things started out with a game of Heist, and it did not go as you would expect. In the opening round QLASH tried to sneak down the right hand side of the map to get a surprise attack on the safe, but Wave managed to scout it and decided to take the same tactic. It came down to a safe race and it was eventually Wave who won it. Rounds two and three of the opening set were much more standard, with big fights going off in the middle of the map. Both teams looked good, with close rounds being decided at the last moments, but it was Wave who came out with the 2-1 win on Heist to go 1-0 up overall in the series.
QLASH really showed how good they are in the next round, which was Bounty, with some very controlled and strategic play in the opening game to take a comfortable win. However the next two matches were a little crazy, with them both ending in a draw and forcing a replay. Neither team particularly wanted to commit to a big push to end the game in the dying seconds, knowing how important it was to not give away crucial points in this final.
After the missteps of two draws QLASH once again played a near perfect round. After waiting until the final 15 seconds where they were 1-0 down in stars they unleashed a massive attack baked around a Brock super and ended up team wiping Wave, taking a 6-1 win and taking home the set to even up the overall score to 1-1.
Wave took an early 1-0 lead in Brawl Ball, despite seemingly misplaying and destroying their own defensive walls moments before scoring. However, it was enough to take the round, and gave them the upper hand. They continued the aggressive style in the next round, again breaking their own defenses early on and again it didn’t come back to bite them, as this round ended in a draw.
However on the third round that strategy did hurt them, pretty much directly leading to a QLASH goal in the opening minute and again giving them a direct path to the goal seconds later to give them a second and the win. Forcing it into the deciding Brawl Ball game.
Wave took a rapid 1-0 lead in this one but then QLASH tied it up almost as instantly. A goal line clearance from QLASH saved the set for them, and then it went into overtime where QLASH managed to take the win, bringing it to 2-1 in the overall score line.
QLASH just needed to take the win in Siege to become Red Bull M.E.O. champions, and opened things up with another impressive strategy, totally having control of the round and never giving Wave a chance. Somehow Wave managed to hold on to even up the set, but in reality they should have lost, with it literally coming down to the final milliseconds of the round.
In what would be the final round of the competition QLASH again looked strong, showing why they are one of the best teams in the world and taking home the victory in impressive style. They are now Red Bull M.E.O. Brawl Stars champions – congratulations QLASH.
