The History of Splendour In The Grass

Watch our exclusive animated film about the history of Australia's Splendour In The Grass festival.

Way back at the start of the Noughties, a new festival was born in the stunning surroundings of Byron Bay, New South Wales. Immediately, Splendour in the Grass staked its claim as Australia’s premiere sonic shindig.
With a lyrical bent (the name was inspired by Wordsworth’s lengthily titled poem Ode On Intimations Of Immortality From Recollections Of Early Childhood) and an eye for the unusual, Splendour In The Grass has attracted vast crowds of the party faithful and an eclectic selection of performers over the years – Kanye West turned up with a host of angels, Lorde saved the day when Frank Ocean pulled out at the last minute and even WikiLeaks firebrand Julian Assange made an appearance via satellite.
Now firmly established in its new home of North Byron Parklands, the 2018 iteration will welcome its largest crowd ever as the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Vampire Weekend, Khalid, Chvrches and many more do their thing.
Before it all kicks off on Friday, July 20, check out our exclusive film about the festival’s colourful history in the player above.
