Introduced to snowboarding at the age of three during a family trip to New Zealand, James quickly developed a passion for the sport. By ten, he was specializing in halfpipe snowboarding, making his mark on the international stage at 15 by competing in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, becoming the youngest male athlete from any nation to participate in 50 years.
Throughout his illustrious career, James has amassed numerous accolades, solidifying his status as one of Australia's most successful winter sports athletes. He clinched the World Halfpipe Championship title in 2017 and made history at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics by securing a bronze medal—the first by an Australian male snowboarder at the Games. Between 2022 and 2026, Scotty James has continued to solidify his legacy in snowboarding. In January 2024, he clinched his sixth Winter X Games SuperPipe title in eight years, further establishing his dominance in the sport. Later that year, he secured his fourth FIS World Championship gold medal in the halfpipe event at St. Moritz, Switzerland, setting a new record. In January 2025, James added another accolade by winning his seventh Winter X Games snowboard halfpipe title, moving one shy of Shaun White's record. Looking ahead, James has expressed his intention to compete in a fifth Winter Olympics in 2026, aiming for the elusive gold medal in Milano Cortina, Italy
Beyond the slopes, James's personal life has garnered attention. In May 2023, he married Canadian singer-songwriter Chloe Stroll in a picturesque ceremony in Venice, Italy. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Leo Harry James, on October 10, 2024. Their relationship, initiated in 2019 through Chloe's brother, Formula 1 driver Lance Stroll, has been a harmonious blend of personal and professional support.
