Long before Yan Diomande was playing on football’s biggest stages, he was kicking a ball around Abidjan on whatever surface he could find. He didn’t need a proper pitch or the latest boots – he just wanted to play.
Now, after a journey that has taken him from Ivory Coast to the United States, Spain and Germany, the exciting winger is beginning the latest chapter of his career at Real Madrid.
A football dream born in Abidjan
Football was everywhere for Diomande growing up in Ivory Coast. “We played on any surface we could find, no real boots, no proper pitch, just pure love for football,” he recalls.
Cristiano Ronaldo was his hero – so much so that when someone bought him a Manchester United shirt, he took a black marker and wrote 'Ronaldo 7' across the back.
His younger sister Roxane was also a huge influence, and believed in his footballing ambitions from an early age. After her death while Diomande was beginning his professional career, he vowed to honour her through his football, saying: “Everything I do on a football pitch, it’s for you.”
At 15, still unable to speak English, Diomande made the huge move to the United States to join DME Academy in Florida, and it wasn't long before he was attracting the attention of European scouts.
Finding a way into European football
The route to Europe, however, wasn't a straightforward one. Trials with several clubs – including Rangers, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Olympiacos – came and went without a contract, and when his US visa expired, Diomande returned to Africa with his professional dream hanging in the balance.
It was Spanish side Leganés who eventually offered him a chance and Diomande grabbed it with both hands. He made rapid progress in Spain and, at 18, made his professional debut against none other than Real Madrid. His first professional goal followed in May 2025, helping Leganés to a 3–2 La Liga win over Espanyol.
It was a breakthrough spell that quickly caught the eye, with RB Leipzig snapping up the young winger and bringing him to the Bundesliga that summer.
A breakthrough season at RB Leipzig
Diomande joined RB Leipzig in July 2025 and quickly made his mark. In December, he became the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score a hat-trick, before finishing his debut league season with 12 goals and eight assists. His performances earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award.
“It felt like proof that all the sacrifices my family and I made were worth it,” he said.
Taking Ivory Coast onto the biggest stage
Following in the footsteps of national heroes such as Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré was another childhood dream of Diomande's – one which didn't take long to come true as his rapid rise continued onto the international stage.
He made his senior Ivory Coast debut in October 2025 and marked the occasion with a goal in a 7–0 World Cup qualifying win over Seychelles. Less than a year later, he appeared at his first World Cup, becoming his country’s youngest-ever player at the tournament at the age of 19. He was named player of the match in the opening win over Ecuador and later provided an assist against Curaçao as Ivory Coast reached the knockout stage for the first time.
The Real Madrid dream becomes reality
Just one year after joining RB Leipzig, Diomande returned to La Liga in August 2026 as a Real Madrid player, in a move that made him the club’s record signing and the first Ivorian to pull on the famous white shirt. He went on to make his official debut later that month in a 2–1 win over Espanyol.
“It’s the fulfilment of a childhood dream, it’s everything I’ve worked for,” he said. “I can’t wait to write my chapter at this club and contribute to the club's success.”
His rapid rise earned further recognition in 2026, with a nomination for the Ballon d’Or Men’s Young Talent of the Year award.
