Breaking
As previous Red Bull Dance Your Style winner Tony Oxybel sees it, there’s nothing like the liberation that comes with dance.
“Generally in life, I’m a very reserved person,” he once told Red Bull. “But dance really brings that other side of me where I’m more fun and more confident. And dance allows me to deal with my true authentic self. It’s not as easy in real life to be vulnerable. But dance is really freeing.”
It’s a sentiment many dancers would echo. Luckily, in Perth, there’s no shortage of places to tap into that liberation. The WA capital is spoilt for choice when it comes to dance studios -- if you’re keen to get moving, it’s just a matter of finding the right spot for you.
Whether you’ve been training your style for years or just feel inspired to take your very first class, here’s Perth’s best dance studios.
01
The Spot
Where: 2/220 Carr Place, Leederville
It’s not just street dance that Perth’s The Spot offers – they do dance, strength and conditioning and mobility classes all in the one, ahem, “spot” (hence the name).
But if you’re coming to dance, you’ll get to choose from regular breaking, hip-hop, dancehall, locking and house classes. Vogue and krump classes pop up on the weekly schedule, and legends of the scene like Hiro often drop by to take classes. In 2023 they even ran a special ‘Battle Camp’ – designed to teach students everything you need to know about dance battles, from the culture behind them to the tactics that can help you win.
And away from the street styles, there’s heels, choreography and commercial classes are also offered, so all bases are well and truly covered.
02
Elan Dance
Where: 18 Murchison Tce, Perth CBD
Elan Dance brings fun, high energy, booty-shaking dance classes to Perth. They’re selective about the styles they offer, teaching classes in hip-hop, twerk, dancehall, afrojam, heels, and contemporary – not a ballet barre in sight.
Importantly, Elan Dance doesn't just teach the steps but the culture, paying homage to where these styles originated. Start with the 101 classes aimed at beginners, then after six weeks you can stretch your skills by going up to level 2. There’s three classes every weeknight to choose from, plus a packed weekend schedule, so Elan Dance will keep you busy.
03
Street Corner Dance
Where: Pop-up locations
Street Corner Dance teaches one style and one style only: hip-hop.
Teacher Alice G runs classes on Thursdays and Sundays each week – Thursday evening is a foundations class at the YMCA and Sunday afternoons have both foundation and routine classes at the King Street Arts Centre. Classes are open to dancers of all levels; hit their Linktree for all the latest info as the schedule can change.
04
The Arthaus Group
Where: King Street, Perth
Arthaus is best known for their commercial dance classes, but they also offer great hip-hop classes on Mondays and Thursdays at King Street studios. Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels are all available.
05
The Dance Collective
Where: 39 Winnacott St, Willagee
There are over 10 classes on most weekdays at the Dance Collective, plus more than 20 on Saturdays, so you’ll be spoilt for choice at this Willagee studio. Hip-hop, lyrical and breaking are all on the schedule, alongside the likes of commercial, acro dance and heels. Adults and kids alike are catered for.
06
Dance Workshop
Dance Workshop has been around for 30 years, proudly teaching adults aged 18 to 80 (no kids classes here). You can take casual classes in styles like hip-hop and dancehall, or commit to a six week basics course in hip-hop that will give you a great grounding in the style. It’s a non-competitive, non-judgemental space perfect for beginners.
