The Rice Diaries - Exploring China Part 2
The Canadian crew continues their journey exploring China’s unique view on skateboarding.
Traveling to Asia for your first time – or even for the experienced – can be stressful. In Shenzhen, there are almost no English-speaking people, or white people for that matter.
Luckily, we had our guide Will. Without him, there would have been no trip as he planned everything, with no stress for us. From booking hotels and cabs to ordering our meals, he handled it all.
This left us to skate and enjoy ourselves, which you could really feel once we got settled in. Having a good crew is the top priority for having a successful trip.
Other than skateboarding each day until we were tired, we also hit the famous Queen Spa, our second home. This is a massive spa which our friend worked at, so we were treated well. If you're in Shenzhen, I'd recommend checking it out.
This was one of the only trips I've been on where no one wanted to leave. Usually, after a few weeks, people get homesick or sore from skating, but I heard no complaints.
Even on the plane ride home, everyone was planning next year's trip back. I hope these photos and video inspire you to venture out of your comfort zone and explore the beauty of Asia.
As you can see in the top right of the photo, it's raining here. Mike Campbell skated hard this day and wanted to end it with an ollie into the hubba. Wet marble is very dangerous, slippery and unpredictable.
This bank is very steep and was right by the hotel; we actually never thought to hit it as it's so tough to skate. One morning, while going for breakfast, Cory Klim does a nice wall ride and, before you know it, he's getting into front feebles. I don't think anyone has even grinded it before.
We could see this spot from our hotel window, so we skated it a lot. A perimeter of marble banks, stairs and cute girls walking by made this the perfect spot. Matt Berger back tails from the top section to the lower bank.
