1. Mustang Region, Nepal

With towering peaks and rich Buddhist culture at every turn, the Upper Mustang district of Nepal is the perfect destination for people who are looking for adventure and history wrapped in one. The Annapurna Conservation Area, which stretches through the Upper Mustang and the surrounding areas, is home to centuries-old trodden paths.

Monasteries and high-altitude villages allow a deeper look into Nepalese culture. Keep in mind, both Upper Mustang and the Annapurna Conservation Area require permits for overnight stays.

2. Salento, Colombia

Evergreen rainforests, rolling mountains and coffee estates mark the scene surrounding the Andean town of Salento. Discover snow-capped peaks and tough downhill mountain bike descents within neighbouring Los Nevados National Natural Park, where wild camping, hiking and mountain biking are treasured pastimes of both visitors and locals.

3. San Juan National Forest, Colorado

Tucked into the southwest corner of Colorado, the San Juan National Forest is notorious for advanced backcountry skiing, Colorado Trail access and never ending vistas of snow-capped mountains that reach above 13,000 feet (3,962m).

Come summer, the high country becomes a haven for adventure-seeking hikers and mountain bikers looking for the next thrill and epic high-altitude camping spots. Access to the San Juan National Forest and Colorado Trail can be found near Silverton, Colorado.

4. Queenstown, New Zealand

The natural beauty surrounding Queenstown, New Zealand allows adventurers of all types to get out of the city and explore in abundance.

With Queenstown's Skyline Mountain Bike Park just a gondola lift away and peaks such as Bowen and Ben Lomond in sight, it’s no wonder the South Island city has become a port of call for adventure-seeking tourists from around the world. Hike or bike through the mountains to set up camp at Moke Lake, where lush greenery and crystal waters meet.

5. Chamonix, France

Chamonix, France has been a mecca for outdoor sports for decades, with quick access to the French Alps for both summer and winter adventures.

The Mont-Blanc massif is home to hiking, mountain biking and climbing through steep peaks and dense granite. The Tour du Mont-Blanc is a local favourite trail for hiking through rugged backcountry, where backpackers have the option to choose between wilderness camping and scenic chalets.

6. Quilindaña, Ecuador

Often referred to as the Matterhorn of the Andes, the extinct Quilindaña sits within the active Cotopaxi Volcano region of Ecuador.

7. Ho Chi Minh Trail, Vietnam

Exploring Vietnam via the Ho Chi Minh Trail allows visitors a new way to experience the history and geography of one of the world’s most stunning countries. Mountain and motor bikers are able to see the interior of Vietnam, shying away from touristy destinations such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

Travel through jungle and lush rice paddies, while taking in the deep, complicated history the trail was birthed from. Wilderness camping can be found along the route.

8. Semonkong, Lesotho

Explore deep gorges and the overwhelming site of Maletsunyane Falls in the Semonkong region of Lesotho, where the remote high desert landscape feels otherworldly.

10. Mount Kenya, Kenya

Craggy, steep and dotted with high desert shrubbery, Mount Kenya is the second tallest peak in Africa (second only to Kilimanjaro) and rises to 17,057 feet (5,200m).
