8 mods we need to see in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

PUBG isn’t open for business to modders yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Here are the mods we really want to see.

Given that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds came about from a mod itself, it's understandable that the community is hotly anticipating the addition of mod support. While PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, has expressed a hesitance to open his game up to potential hackers and cheats, he has confirmed that there are plans to add support for community mods down the line.
With players already beginning to peel away from PUBG in the search for new experiences, and rivals like Fortnite providing regular changes, updates and additions, it's safe to say that modding is going to contribute greatly to the future of PUBG. Keeping that in mind, we've had a think about the kind of things we'd like to see in future mods.

1. Zombies

So we'll start with the obvious one. Everyone knows that if you want something to be cooler or more appealing to the masses, you add zombies or dragons. While we're not sure how to make giant, fire-breathing lizards work in the context of PUBG, zombies could be a superb addition.
Imagine hunting down 99 other players whilst also avoiding the shambling hordes of the dead. How long can you hide in that bush with the recently deceased wandering around looking for some tasty brains to munch on? Bye bye, campers; hello, moveable buffet.

2. Outlandish weapons

One thing most players will agree with is that of the two big Battle Royale games dominating the field right now, PUBG is by far the more serious and measured. For many, that in itself is the draw. But, there are those who wouldn't mind seeing caution thrown to the wind a little where the arsenal is concerned.
We've seen mods for titles like GTA V introducing weird and wonderful weaponry, so why not PUBG? Obviously the sky's the limit here, and the inclusion of bouncing sheep bombs, freeze rays and plasma cannons couldn't hurt.

3. Bizarre landscapes

Now we know there are likely more maps coming soon, but currently the only locales available for our preferred brand of wholesale warfare are the starting island of Erangle and the desert map of Miramar. At the time of writing we simply don't know what to expect, although jungles, snowscapes and urban environs are strong frontrunners.
The beauty of modding, of course, is that the only limit is imagination. Could someone recreate the San Andreas cityscape? Perhaps Skyrim's icy tundras, or the alien vistas of No Man's Sky? We're no experts, but we've seen what modders have done with the planets in Hello Games' odyssey, and it's very cool.

4. Lightsabers

Yes, Outlandish Weaponry was a few entries back, but this is different, honest. See, PUBG has melee combat – the frying pan is a particular favourite among the desperate – but let's imagine you could wield Lightsabers and force powers in PUBG.
A Star Wars crossover isn't an obvious choice, but it's a distinct possibility and one that would utterly alter the game.

5. Wildlife

Similar to zombies, adding in dangerous wildlife, à la Far Cry, would give players even more to worry about. Battlegrounds is already a stressful game, but can you imagine the tension of creeping through the desert, just waiting to be sniped by a hidden opponent, only to hear the shikka-shikka-shikka of a rattlesnake's tail?
Worse, suppose you're down to the final few, the map has closed in, there's already nowhere to hide, and that building just up ahead is the last safe haven left to get your head down for a few previous seconds of regrouping - but what's that lurking in the shadows? Is that another player with a shotgun waiting for you to get within effective range? No. It's a mountain lion, and you're dead.

6. War machines

Tanks! Planes! AT-AT Walkers! Battle mechs! Dirt bikes with 50-calibre mounted machine guns on the back! You get the picture, right? There are already vehicles in PUBG to help you get around, but vehicular combat isn't really a thing.
Well, the right mod could change that, introducing a cavalcade of destructive vehicles to the mix and upping the mayhem levels exponentially.

7. Destructible environments

This was something people expected to see in the game anyway, but was sadly omitted. It absolutely makes sense, and would change the game in really interesting ways. No more running for the cover of nearby buildings, or hiding behind trees.
Mix this in with the War Machines mod and you've got a battlefield where there's truly nowhere to hide.

8. Alternate modes

This is the big one, really. PUBG is what it is, and though new maps and gear will become available, the chances of seeing different game modes introduced by the creators are much slimmer. But variety is the spice of life, and we've seen modders create entire new games (PUBG itself, for example) by playing around within existing frameworks.
Is it that crazy to imagine modders developing whole new modes for Battlegrounds? From simple ideas like Rocket Sniping to 50v50 King of the Hill, the possibilities are immense. How about a melee only mode? Or a Priority Target mode (one player with high health, armour, powerful weapons versus everyone else). The floor is open.
