Gaming
Seven million players entered the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2017, but only 32 made it through to the grand final in London. These gamers dedicate a huge amount of their time to FIFA, playing 40 matches in the weekend leagues and competing in FUT Champions tournaments. Of course, they all boast unbelievable tekkers, but they also have a game plan, with preferred formations and tactics.
Spencer 'Gorilla' Ealing
Gorilla won $200,000 when he beat German player Deto 7-3 in the FIFA Interactive World Cup Final.
Tactics: "I have a formation that I play, but with different opponents and different formations, you have to adjust. It all depends on what the opponent is playing and you just go from there.
"I play 4-3-1-2. Everyone is playing with one striker [at FIWC], but I like to go down the middle, and having two strikers in the centre means that you can do one-twos. If you only have one striker, you don’t have a partner to play the one-twos with."
Corentin 'Vitality Rockyy' Chevrin
French playerRockyy beat Shellz to win the FUT Champions Grand Final in Berlin. He was beaten by Janoz in the quarter finals of the FIFA Interactive World Cup.
Tactics: My favourite formation is 4-2-3-1. I think it’s a more stable formation defensively and when attacking, you can play with wingers. I like to have possession, so I think it’s the best formation for me. If I’m losing at the end of the game, I change it to 4-3-3, so the wingers are more offensive.
Florian 'CodyDerFinisher' Müller
CodyDerFinisher was one of three Germans to reach the FIWC Divisional Finals. The FC Basel player was beaten by eventual champion Gorilla.
Tactics: "I have a gameplan but it depends on the opponent. For example, I played against [Lyon player] Rafsou and he is a very attacking player so I had to switch my style a little bit. My formation remained the same but my style was different; you need to adjust to your opponent. I normally play 4-2-3-1."
Reinhard 'Rein10' Krause Manzotti
Mexican born Reinhard finished second at the FUT Champions Season 2 Regional Final in Whistler. He missed out on a place in the knockout rounds at FIWC on goal difference, finishing his group in fifth place behind eventual runner-up Deto.
Tactics: “Usually, when it’s not going your way, you have to find another way. You need to be comfortable and you have to have confidence, but if it’s not working, you must not be stubborn – you must be flexible. I play 4-2-3-1; I attack with two number 10s and sometimes they spread out wide.”
Aman Seddiqi
Roma's Aman qualified through the FIWC Regional Final Americas. The American was knocked out in the quarter-finals, but finished the tournament with the best defence.
Tactics: “I'm using a narrow formation - a lot of the guys here [at FIWC] are going wide, but I’m trying to get it through the middle, play around in the final third as much as I can and be creative. I’ll use some skill moves here and there, but I play the game the way I want it to be played – controlling it as much as I can. I would say it’s possession-based – at least until I get a chance."
