With FIFA 20 just around the corner, EA will soon reveal the top 100 rated players for Ultimate Team. So which midfield maestros and rock-solid CDMs will receive the highest rating when the game launches later this month?
Here’s a prediction for the eight best central midfielders in FIFA 20 Ultimate Team.
1. Luka Modric
- FIFA 19 rating: 91
- FIFA 20 prediction: 91
After another solid season at Real Madrid, it looks almost certain the Luka Modric will retain his title as the best midfielder on FIFA.
With 4 goals and 8 assists last season, he has likely done enough to keep his 91 rating from FIFA 19, although if EA is feeling particularly harsh a drop down to 90 is possibly.
Either way, Modric will still be the highest-rated midfielder and will yet again be an elite-tier addition to anyone’s Ultimate Team.
2. Toni Kross
- FIFA 19 rating: 90
- FIFA 20 prediction: 89
Modric’s teammate Toni Kroos will once again be one of the top central midfielders for FIFA 20, but may see a slight drop in rating after a below-par season in Madrid.
The German will likely fall one rating to 89 as he only managed a single goal and 6 assists in all competitions last season.
3. Paul Pogba
- FIFA 19 rating: 88
- FIFA 20 prediction: 89
Last season Paul Pogba had a somewhat turbulent time playing for Manchester United, with many doubting his work rate and labelling him inconsistent.
However, the stats paint a somewhat brighter picture. The Frenchman managed to score 13 times and rack up 9 assists, which should be enough to nudge his rating up to 89 for FIFA 20.
4. Sergio Busquets
- FIFA 19 rating: 88
- FIFA 20 prediction: 89
Barcelona stalwart Sergio Busquets earned himself an upgrade to 89 midway through the FIFA 19 season and he’ll likely keep that rating going into FIFA 20.
His goals and assists numbers won’t blow you away, but Busquets’ defensive work is what makes him a top-tier midfielder and saw him play the most minutes out of any of Barcelona’s talented midfielders in La Liga last season.
As well as his high defending stats, FIFA players love his passing ability and his height for winning aerial battles.
5. N’Golo Kante
- FIFA 19 rating: 89
- FIFA 20 prediction: 89
Alongside fellow countryman Pogba, Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante will once again be one of the Premier League’s best midfielders. His rating of 89 in FIFA 19 will probably stick for FIFA 20 after 5 goals, 4 assists and numerous solid displays last season.
Often playing a more advanced midfield role for periods of last season under ex-manager Maurizio Sarri, we could potentially see a position change for Kante too, seeing him shift from a CDM to a CM. Whether new boss Frank Lampard will continue this trend when Kante returns from injury in the next few weeks, however, is unknown.
6. Thiago Alcântara
- FIFA 19 rating: 87
- FIFA 20 prediction: 88
The technically-gifted Thiago is next on the list and looks set to receive an upgrade ahead of FIFA 20. The Spaniard is certainly worth keeping an eye on, especially if you to create a La Liga/Bundesliga hybrid squad on FUT.
With 3 goals and 8 assists in all competitions and an average match rating of 7.59 (according to whoscored.com) last season, the Spaniard should see a slight upgrade to an 88-rated card.
7. Casemiro
- FIFA 19 rating: 88
- FIFA 20 prediction: 88
Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro was one of the best defensive midfielders to use in FIFA 19 and will almost certainly be one of the top picks for FIFA 20 as well.
Despite only earning 4 goals and a single assist in all competitions last season, it’s Casemiro’s defensive capabilities that make him a great addition to any Ultimate Team.
Providing maximum possible chemistry to the likes of Marcelo and Vinicius Junior and as well as links to countless other exciting Brazilians, Casemiro's usefulness goes beyond his impressive stats.
8. Axel Witsel
- FIFA 19 rating: 85
- FIFA 20 prediction: 87
Although there are plenty of midfielders who may also land an 87-rated card for FIFA 20, Borussia Dortmund’s Axel Witsel takes up the final spot with a big upgrade likely.
The powerful and skilful Belgian was an integral part of the Dortmund side that pushed eventual champions Bayern Munich all the way in the Bundesliga last season.
A great all-rounder, Witsel is a must for anyone looking to build a strong Bundesliga team in the early stages of FIFA 20.
