Red Bull Thre3Style West Regional Qualifier
The battle continues as Calgary hosts Western Canada’s top DJs.
Descending upon Commonwealth Bar & Stage last night in Calgary AB, Red Bull Thre3Style: Best of the West spoiled a crowd of eager partygoers. The last time this city was graced with Thre3Style competition was for the 2013 Canadian National Finals - an unforgettable night which saw Adam Double You claim the title as National champ. With the slates wiped clean this year, eight of the country's best from the west showcased their distinct style with one thing on their mind - Vancouver and the Canadian National Finals.
DJ Flipout
Once again, the host of the evening DJ Flipout delivered a set on all 45s. The authentic and raw sound of these records kept the eager Red Bull Thre3Style crowd in check and showcased the art of turntablism.
Smalltown DJs
Calgary’s own Smalltown DJs took the stage in their home venue and their focused demeanor is always incredible to watch. They are experts at reading the room and getting the crowd moving and they did just that.
Charly Hustle
Kicking off the competition was Saskatoon’s Charly Hustle aka. Sean Grant. No stranger to the Red Bull Thre3Style stage, he won his reigional qualifier last year in Winnipeg. You can’t help but love his playful energy and classic song selection that always seems to take the audience on a ride down memory lane.
kAtO
BC's kAtO delivered with an impressive collection of samples. One of the judging aspects of Red Bull Thre3Style is originality and creativity when choosing tracks - this set kAtO apart from the competition.
Jamil The DJ
Some were dubbing Winnipeg's Jamil The DJ as "Smiles" because he was doing just that during his entire set, which was well crafted and featured smooth transitions.
Ivan Rankic
Calgary’s own Ivan Rankic hit the decks next, and he is no stranger to the Commonwealth Stage. Alongside fellow competitor Heebz they have rocked the dance floors on Saturday nights on this stage for over two years.
Nick Bike
Nick Bike is used to the Red Bull Thre3Style stage as he was the Vancouver Regional Qualifier champion in 2013, and competed in Calgary for the Canadian title. This year he delivered a set which stuck true to his roots.
DJ Quartz
Regina’s DJ Quartz energized the crowd with some classic party favorites, a smart move to keep the party going half way through the competition.
DJ C-SIK
Calgary’s DJ C-SIK had a strong crowd presence, and delivered a technically sound set with impressive track selection. His beat juggling and scratching proved why he belonged on the Red Bull Thre3Style stage.
DJ Heebz
Closing out the night was DJ Heebz who proved exactly what he’s been up to for the past year - delivering a set with banger after banger, he finished the night off strong.
Hedspin and Four Color Zack
In classic Red Bull Thre3Style fashion, past champs and judges DJ Hedspin and Four Color Zack took the stage to remind the crowd what they are looking for from each of the competitors - to push the art of turntablism with creativity and skill, while each of them controls the party and brings the crowd along for the ride.
Best of the West
After all was said and done DJ C-SIK, Charly Hustle, and DJ Heebz will be heading to the Canadian National Finals in Vancouver to take on DJ D-Smooth, DJ Tom Fleming, and PLAEBOI from the East as well as returning National Champion Adam Doubleyou.
