Stunt School: Red Dead Redemption
We head back to the wild west with Red Dead Redemption in pursuit of some ridiculous tricks.
Rockstar Games is better known for its gargantuan Grand Theft Autofranchise, but the studio’s open world chops have been applied to other genres too. The wild west, for example, was explored in Red Dead Revolver, and its sequel Red Dead Redemption, which hit shelves almost five years ago – it’s hard to believe it’s been that long since we were last gunslinging and lassoing.
With no word on a next-gen sequel just yet, we’re holding onto hope that a new instalment in the western series will be on the way now that Rockstar’s nearly finished up with polishing off GTA V – or at least a next-gen remake. While we wait, here’s a look back at some of the best stunts you’re able to pull off in the open world western.
Turn a stagecoach into a boat
John Marston’s enemies aren’t just the bandits and most wanted citizens roaming the badlands – water is equally unkind too. So why not construct your own river raft using the ol’ classic stagecoach for a new take at the rapids? You won’t have too much control, and you’ll have to go with the flow of the river, but it sure beats losing a life as soon as you touch a spot of H2O. Just bear in mind that your horses won’t quite survive the trip...
Glitch your way into a freefall
Despite being patched out of the game, we’re still in awe at this little glitch that gives big results. Hit play on the video above to see just what happens if you do manage to pull it off: you’ll need a pre-patch version of the game though (So er, an unplugged PS3 or Xbox 360 with the patch deleted), but you’ll be flung high into the sky letting you freefall like one of our very own BASE jumpers. Just uh, you’ll have no chute...
Go cliffdiving
Our very own Red Bull Cliff Divers are some of the most fearless athletes we’ve ever seen, which is why we’re not surprised to see gamers imitating them in all sorts of different titles, from Skyrim to Just Cause. Red Dead Redemption is not exempt either, as in the video above will show you, MrJDS205 and friends seek out the best stops to try and replicate some of the best moments from recent years. Hit play to see if they can succeed...
Joust with your mates
The Achievement Hunter guys never leave any stone unturned when it comes to sandbox games, and to help you squeeze out the most of Red Dead Redemption, they’ve come up with with a wild west spin on a medieval classic: jousting. Yep, if you’ve already finished up the story and blasted all the zombies in the game’s DLC, why not grab your friends, saddle up on a horse and have a go at knocking each other out of your saddles?
Unleash some parkour
If there’s one thing from the Assassin’s Creed series that we’d love to see pop up in more games, it’s the parkour mechanics. We imagine the badlands of Red Dead Redemption would be a little more fun to explore with some free running action built into the game, but that hasn’t stopped Standers37 from trying his best in the video above. Running and jumping between buildings is something more suited to Ezio Auditore, but it’s well worth seeing Marston try his hand at parkour too.
