Even if you didn't hear Sinkane's acclaimed 2015 album Mean Love, you might know Ahmed Gallab as the man who led the Atomic Bomb! band, the 15-piece big band tribute to Nigerian electro-funk recluse William Onyeabor, featuring David Byrne and Damon Albarn. It's certainly been an eventful few years for Sinkane. "Those 14 months really changed my life," says Ahmed.
It's been a steep learning curve, too. He's discovered how to put on big shows and how to inspire people with his positive vibes. This defiance, as well as his typically slinky grooves and the melodic influence of Sub-Saharan African music, is what dominates Sinkane's latest album Life And Livin' It. It's a record to make the sun shine, but explores some big themes too. It's also a global album, as his exclusive playlist (below) suggests.
"I've immersed myself in music from all over the world – music from everywhere," says Gallab. "There's also a Grateful Dead song in there. Because, well, they rule. And also one of the most far-out Miles Davis joints ever recorded. These songs make me smile and dance in my underwear after taking a hot shower. I lose myself and start imitating the opening sequence of The Lion King, and cuckooing. Enjoy it."
