Skateboarding
While modern-day skate parts are usually filled with incomprehensible technical trickery and machine-like progression, this style of skating often comes at the expense of good style. In his latest release, TJ Rogers wanted to escape this mainstream trajectory. He set out to simplify his craft, and display his individual style and creativity on a skateboard.
From his trick and spot selection, to his use of the old school rap classic Put It On by Big L, and filmer Devin Lopez’s use of fish and follow techniques, it feels like you’re watching a skate part from the late 90s — with huge switch ollies, and flawless TJ Roger calibre skating.
“My goal was to keep good flow and pace, good trick variety, skate fast, and prioritize aesthetically good looking spots,” said Rogers. "I was going for a different approach with this part, I tried to focus on simplifying my skating, which I believe shows it the best."
The segment was mostly filmed in the midst of the busy Olympic qualifier season during the summer of 2019. Globetrotting from one competition to the next, he took full advantage of his itinerary to seek out and skate unique, creative features along the way.
His personal favourite: the nollie-kickflip front-nose to bank transfer captured in Barcelona, Spain.
When you film a trick at a good looking spot that compliments the rider's style, it adds a different perspective to skating. It really gives it some flavour.
Though the part emphasizes creativity, flow, and style, the final product didn’t come easy.

According to Rogers, every trick in the part was a battle. The switch ollie ender, for instance, took over two hours. As sunlight began to fade, he and Devin Lopez agreed on five more tries before calling it quits. Obviously he overcame the pressure.
“That’s just the nature of skateboarding.”
