Living next to the beach in Porto, Portugal, has given João a laid-back outlook. Nevertheless, he’s fully committed to filming this project in three weeks despite having just come off knee surgery, and while writing his master’s thesis for college. We hope you enjoy his effortless style and wide array of flip finesse.
Hi João, what’s it like growing up skateboarding in Porto? I started skating out the front of my house when I was 12 – at the time there was only one skate shop and everyone would meet at one plaza, Matosinhos. Skateboarding has grown – nowadays many people show up there, and we are all great friends. All I want in skateboarding is to have fun.
How was it trying to film a video part in three weeks? Really difficult! The first time you came down to Ericiera, it rained eight days out of 14. I hurt my knee three days before the trip ended. Then you went back to Frankfurt and I came back to Porto, to write my thesis and to start physiotherapy. My knee wasn’t good – I'm still doing physio – but you were so motivated to finish the clip that I told you to come back and I would do my best. So, first week was all good, I was motivated to get tricks. The weather was good, but my knee didn't allow me to skate gaps or stairs so I didn't know what to do anymore! We didn't have much time to try really complicated stuff, and normally I don't skate every day. Towards the end it started to feel like a real job. I don’t like that but in the end it was cool – I liked the result. Thank you for all your work.
What is the best thing to eat in Porto? Francesinha [laughs]. Francesinha is an awesome meat sandwich: sausage, ham, salami and cheese all over it... at the end they add a very spicy sauce... really good! When someone comes to Porto they have to try it, it is the best.
Why do people call you ‘Bubu’? Because I love to eat – I'm always eating. If I see someone eating, I ask them to give me a little taste. It´s the same as this character from Dragon Ball, ‘Bubu’– The Fat One [laughs].
