When you think of World Rally Championship, you think of high-flying cars and inch-perfect rallying action. When you talk about WRC icons, you talk about Sébastien Ogier, Colin McRae or Tommi Makkinen. But what about the people who ensure our favourite drivers can push these mean machines to their limits? The humble engineers and technicians who can turn a piece of mangled machinery into a winning machine in a matter of hours?
As Richard Millener, M-Sport’s Client Liaison Manager, explains: “What our technicians and engineers can do on your WRC cars in 30 minutes can take up to a week at your local garage.” It’s a no wonder that drivers are given standing instructions that in case of any issue, simply manage to reach the car back to the service area and the team will take care of the rest. It’s this safety net provided by the mechanics that the drivers are able to push their machine to their limit and rack up wins and championships.
So how exactly do they do it? Let’s step inside the M-Sport World Rally Team's garage and understand how each and every team personnel plays a crucial role in the team’s overall success.
