THE CONCEPT
Behind the concept for Red Bull Midsummer Vikings is Casper Steinfath who is double European and World champion in SUP - and of course the best paddlesurfer in Denmark.
Casper is the man of incredible water challenges. He proved that on a March day in 2018 when he was the first in the world to cross the waters of Skagerrak on his SUP-board - 147 kilometres and 18 hours and 26 minutes in the freezing cold! A completely spectacular achievement equivalent to just about five marathons.
At Red Bull Midsummer Vikings, the participants will experience how it feels to push themselves to the limit as the teams must paddle for 24 hours in a row – both in daylight and in darkness. Each team consists of three to five paddlers and it is up to each team to decide how often their paddlers will take turns during the 24-hours the race.
Red Bull Midsummer Vikings is your chance to truly challenge yourself and push your own limits. Participants can expect a unique SUP-experience on the water as well as on land, where the race area at Amager Standpark will be transformed into a fully equipped campsite.
The goal is to push some boundaries and at the same time have a lot of fun!
THE ROUTE
The course consists of a five-kilometre-long lap around the artificial ‘Amager Strandpark’ in the heart of Copenhagen. There is nice flat water on the inside stretch and the slightly choppy waters of Øresund on the outside.
Even though Øresund can be choppy the course is not in any way difficult or dangerous. It's a course that any semi-skilled paddler can handle and anyone with just a little experience on a board can join! And don't worry - the professional water safety team are going to take good care of you around the clock.
A CHALLENGE FOR EVERYONE
In 2021, over 350 paddlers participated in the event, which in total covered a total distance of almost 9000 kilometres. This is equivalent to having to paddle from Denmark to California. The teams came from Denmark, Sweden and Germany, so you can look forward to international competition when showing up at Amager Strandpark for the next edition of Red Bull Midsummer Vikings.

PADDLE WITH A PURPOSE
Part of the idea behind Red Bull Midsummer Vikings, is to create awareness around various charity projects, by raising money during the event.
Each team is therefore required to make donations per lap they paddle and thereby support the chosen project. Each team is encouraged to find a sponsor that can help with this donation.
In 2021 the event raised almost 16.000 euro to the organization ’Surfgaarden’ and their work to help former soldiers who struggle with PTSD.
