Alphonso Davies has been blazing a trail for himself since he moved to Canada with his parents at the age of five from a refugee camp in Ghana, where he was born. The youngster quickly adapted to his new life in North America and focused on developing his soccer skills with the local teams in the Alberta province.
Making history in the MLS
He started playing at youth level for Edmonton Internationals at the age of five years old before moving to Edmonton Strikers a year later. Fast forward nine years to 2015 and he'd signed for Vancouver Whitecaps FC and become the youngest player to sign a pro contract with a Major League Soccer club.
In 2016, Davies made his MLS debut and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most exciting talents in the division. Deployed mainly as a winger, he played more than 80 times for the club, scoring 12 goals in the process.
A high-profile move to Bayern Munich
In 2019, Davies moved to European giants Bayern Munich and quickly established himself as one of the best left-backs in world football, with his recovery speed and attacking instincts making him an ideal modern full-back.
Davies has enjoyed remarkable success with Bayern, winning the Bundesliga title on seven occasions and the German Cup twice. He was also a key member of the team that won the Champions League crown in 2020 courtesy of a 1-0 win over French club Paris-Saint Germain.
Starring for Canada
Capped for the first time by Canada when he was just 16 years old, it didn't take Davies long to adapt to life on the international stage. Selected as part of the country's Concacaf Gold Cup squad in 2017, he finished the tournament as the joint top-scorer with three goals.
Since then, he has been an ever-present in the Canada side, helping them secure a place at the 2022 World Cup, reach the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America and make history by advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, where Canada's campaign came to an end against Morocco.
Away from the pitch
Davies is known for his upbeat personality and advocacy for refugees and immigrants, often speaking about his background and serving as a role model for youngsters from similar circumstances. He also has a love of gaming, using it as an escape after training sessions and often streaming online to his more than 500k followers on Twitch.
