Els Visser's triathlon story is unique. The talented triathlete not only has a PhD in surgery, but she's also a shipwreck survivor.

Els practised various sports from an early age until in 2008 she focused her full attention on her studies in medicine. Els travelled the world for studies. During a trip through Indonesia in 2014, the boat she had taken with 24 other passengers suddenly sank in the middle of the night. Els was forced to swim for eight hours to a nearby island where she was finally rescued the next day by a passing boat. This bizarre experience has led Els to want to live her life to the fullest and pursue her dreams.
