Beat Roots: Meet the MCs and producers

Glasgow producers Rapture 4D and Polonis came to Red Bull Studios London to hook up with the cream of London's grime scene – here's who got involved.

Glasgow’s grime scene is booming in 2017, with a new generation of young MCs and producers putting their own spin on the UK sound.
Now Beat Roots, the latest project out of Red Bull Studios London, teams up two of the Glasgow scene's star producers – Polonis and Rapture 4D – with the cream of the London scene. Find out who's involved below. 
C Cane
Perhaps the UK’s most exciting young female grime MC, C Cane has turned heads with singles like Bad To The Bone and Levels, and was selected as part of Idris Elba’s ‘Inspire’ project for BBC Three in 2016.
Cadell
Hailing from Bow E3, Cadell has earned his stripes clashing with the likes of Novelist and Stormzy. Trivia: he’s Wiley’s little brother.
Capo Lee
North London MC whose distinct flows and undeniable work ethic has warranted collaborations with legendary DJs such as Spooky (see EP Welcome To Clartsville) and Spyro (the guest packed Why Not? Mixtape). Recently collaborated with grime veteran D Double E on Mud.
Discarda
Hard-spitting Cockney MC with ties to Wiley’s Roll Deep crew.
Faultsz
Up-and-coming MC and member of Lewisham crew The Square.
Flirta D
North west London grime pioneer and member of SLK. Notorious for his unique MCing style, incorporating sound effects into his flows. SLK’s Hype Hype, produced by Sticky, charted in 2005.
Grandmixxer
One of grime’s DJ tastemakers, Grandmixxer also works as Novelist’s tour DJ, and hosts a monthly show on NTS showcasing up and coming talent.

Jammz
Hard-grafting east London MC and producer Jammz started to make a name for himself on London’s radio circuit in 2014 and 2015, appearing regularly on radio stations like Rinse FM, Radar Radio, NTS, Mode FM and BBC 1Xtra and working with established DJs like Slimzee, Spooky, Bok Bok and Spyro. He is signed to Local Action.
Jeb1
Producer Jeb1 is a member of Grandmixxer’s South London Space Agency label.
Jendor
South London grime originator and former member of one of the first grime crews, Essentials. Now leader of the OGz crew with P Money, Blacks and Little Dee.
Killa P
Grime MC from Brixton, South London. He is a member of the grime crews Roll Deep and Cemetery Warriors.
Lady Chann
The UK’s number one dancehall and grime queen, Chann is one third of the dancehall group Suncycle and popped up on Sir Spyro’s 2016 hit Topper Top alongside Killa P and Teddy Bruckshot.
Manga St. Hilaire
Roll Deep member who featured on When I’m ‘Ere and Do Me Wrong, Manga is known for his fast, jumpy flow.

Merky Ace
Grime MC from Lewisham in South London. A founding member of the grime collective Family Tree, he released music on Dirtee Stank and is a founder member of grime crew Tizzy Gang. He also produces beats under the pseudonym Splurt Diablo.
Mez
Nottingham MC who landed on the scene in 2015 with a handful of freestyles on JDZ Media, Mez led a Notts crew in last year’s Grime-A-Side and has recently worked with grime legends like D Double E and Jammer.
P Money
A grime MC from Lewisham, South London, P Money is a member of the OGz crew alongside Jendor, Blacks and Little Dee. He appeared on Lord Of The Mics 6, has collaborated with Lethal Bizzle on Pow 2011, and released records on Rinse and Butterz.

Plastician
Producer Chris Reed was there in the early days of grime and dubstep, and was one of Rinse FM’s leading DJs before he left the station in June. Based in Thornton Heath, Croydon, he runs the label Terrorhythm Recordings and is part of VR broadcasters Unreality Journeys.
Polonis
Polonis only started producing in 2015 and is still just 19 years old, but the Greenock producer has already been recognised as one of the most talented young producers in Scotland, producing for local names like Shogun and Ransom FA and winning fans from Mumdance to Logan Sama.
Rapture 4D
Glasgow producer Teddy Lambert broke into the national grime scene as the producer for Grim Sickers’ breakthrough singles Bread and 200 Bags. He won grime producer clash Beat Boss in April 2017, DJs on Radar Radio, and runs his own independent label Plasma Abuse.
Sh?m
Represented for London in this years Riddim Rally final and is one of the UK’s most diverse and exciting club producers.
Southside JB
Member of Tizzy Gang, alongside Merky Ace, Cadell and Tre Mission.
Spooky
The grime DJ’s DJ, Spooky Bizzle is another important grime historian, and a powerhouse when it comes to keeping it alive on today’s dance floors.
Teeza
Originally best known for his MCing, Teeza has since become known as a producer, specialising in 140bpm productions like Bounce, picked up on Logan Sama’s label Adamantium. He is currently exploring sounds outside of grime and hip-hop.

YGG
Short for ‘You Get Grime’, this young grime trio was formed when Camden MCs PK and Saint P joined forces with Lyrical Strally of Feltham, West London. Figureheads of a new, hungry generation of grime MCs, their meteoric rise was fuelled by explosive sets on Radar, Rinse and NTS.
