Bruce McLaren was one of the great engineers of motor racing history. Despite rarely being spoken of in the same breath as figures like Colin Chapman and Gordon Murray, the New Zealander built up a Formula One team and car company that both endure today, while also enjoying success in the Can-Am series and as a driver in his own right.
Now, a new documentary from Universal Pictures is set to celebrate Bruce McLaren's life. Directed by Roger Donaldson, who’s previously flirted with motorsport with his The World’s Fastest Indian feature film, McLaren will tell the story of Bruce’s arrival in Europe, how in 1959 he became the youngest ever grand prix winner (if you ignore Troy Ruttman's 1952 Indy 500 triumph, back when that was part of the F1 calendar) and built up his self-monikered team only to die while testing his own ferocious McLaren M8D Can-Am racer at Goodwood.
