The League of Legends European Championship is back and in true LEC fashion, G2 esports kicked off their season with a win.
Despite being the only team that didn’t make any roster changes in the offseason, G2 still managed to dominate headlines after their star ADC Luka ‘Perkz’ Perkovic lane swapped back to his original role – mid, while Rasmus ‘Caps’ Winther made the switch to bot.
Caps made his ADC debut during G2’s opening game against Mad Lions and secured an impressive 9 kills and zero deaths. However, the 20-year-old wasn’t quite satisfied with how the game went.
He told us: “It’s been a good day obviously because I won my first LEC game as ADC but I wasn’t very happy with it because it was a bit shaky. We died too much early game.

“The game didn’t favour us at all. I felt like Mad Lions’ team comp made a lot of sense so it was hard to find a solution as to how we can come back into it.”

“Mad Lions caught us off guard”

G2 were the heavy favourites going into their game against a rookie-filled Mad Lions but Caps says the inexperience on Mad Lions’ roster threw them off guard.
He told us: “Mad Lions played really well, they have a few rookies on their team so I was surprised with how confident they were.
“I think the fact EU Masters exist, where players can get practice with playing on stage in front of crowds really helps the rookies out. In the past, when rookies first get to the LEC they would do nothing for the whole game because they’re scared but I didn’t feel like they were doing that today.
“They were doing stuff and it felt fun to play against. As you saw, we weren’t quite ready for it because we were expecting them to be a lot more scared so we fell behind early game.”

ADC Caps is here to stay

Many doubted the legitimacy of Caps’ role swap at first but the Worlds finalist insists that there won’t be any more surprises.
He told us: “I am ADC this split, I’m playing bot lane right now. In the summer, if we feel like we want to swap around the we will. Obviously if it doesn’t go well then we always have the option to swap. If we find success of Perkz and I playing both roles then we can do that.”
His teammate Perkz, who had an incredible year in the bot lane in 2019, said on more than one occasion that he found the ADC position easier to play compared to mid – Caps also shares some of that sentiment.
He told us: “I haven’t been playing ADC for that long as I took a break during offseason and picked it back up quite recently. It’s obviously different to mid lane but it is easier in a sense that you don’t have to do anything.
“AD Carries are not about really doing anything but you have to make sure you survive you know? You have to farm a lot, sit really far back, hope your teammates find a really good engage so you can follow. It’s not like I’d go in as Senna and start a fight.
“Some of it is a bit different to what I was doing last year but I am enjoying it.”

Caps’ switch to bot is much more than just expanding his champion pool or learning a new set of skills. For the first time in his career, the former Fnatic mid laner has to share a lane with another player.
But Caps admits that playing with Mikyx has brought them closer together and he feels the pair are improving their synergy day by day.
He told us: “Mikyx and I are always playing together and talking to each other now both in and out of game. We spend more time together now than we did last year because we want to get a better synergy and we’re learning about how the other person plays.
“Him and Luka have been helping me out. Mikyx has played bot lane for a long time whereas I haven’t so I’m just listening to what he says and ask him questions.
“I don’t really want to make any statements in that sense because I’m new to the role. If there’s something I don’t understand I’d ask him or he’d tell me what I’m doing wrong.”
