Chase & Status are officially back. The duo of Saul Milton and Will Kennard have chalked up some massive wins over the 15 years of their existence, dragging the raw, underground sound of jungle and drum’n’bass into the mainstream on hits like End Credits and Blind Faith, and winning Red Bull Culture Clash back in 2015, as part of dubplate supergroup Rebel Sound.
What we wanted to do was to create authentic, new jungle – and go to the source
Today, they’ve got big news – a new record, which takes them right back to their roots, and maps out a brand new future in the process. The groundwork for RTRN II JUNGLE – which will see the light in 2019 – was laid on a trip to Kingston, Jamaica, where the pair collaborated some of the best musical talent on the island. Then, they used the dancehall tracks they created as raw material for a brand new suite of jungle tunes that hark right back to the genre’s roots in dub and reggae. “We will be representing d’n’b at its most soulful, raw, and uncut level,” says Saul.
So what did Chase & Status get up to in Jamaica? Check it out above in a short documentary, directed by O’Raine Thomas, which premieres exclusively on RedBull.com.
Says Saul:
“In May we spent a week in Kingston, Jamaica, predominantly at Big Yard studio. We went there with Seani B to record tracks from our new album RTRN II JUNGLE. What we wanted to do was to create authentic, new jungle – and go to the source; where the culture and all the inspiration came from.”
“We were fortunate to be able to get in the studio with so many legends and stars of the future. We made a load of dancehall records inspired by the ‘90s era, with the intention of sampling them and making our own jungle. We made our own samples rather than taking from someone else’s work. Now, we have a load of great dancehall records and a bag of brand new jungle too, and we’re excited to get them out there. In our documentary you get to see us in the studio making these tracks, exploring Kingston, and will hopefully gain an insight into the passion and the reasons behind the project.”
