You thought Dirt Rally was tough – you should try actually racing in the Dakar Rally. Every year, amateurs and pro drivers go on a South American tour, racing some of the most treacherous stages in all of motorsport. Anyone can have a go, too – even ex-Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas entered this year's race before injury forced him to pull out.
In reality, you need quite a lot of spare cash (the sort of money ex-Chelsea managers have in their bank account) as by the time you've paid for your flights, entry ticket, your service truck and mechanics, you'll have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Thankfully, a new Dakar 18 game has been announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC, giving fans an idea of what's it's like to take on the world's biggest cross-country rally. It's being developed by Bigmoon Entertainment – who have worked on the art for WRC and MotoGP games in the past – and it's out this year. Check out the trailer below
"We are sure that Dakar 18 will be the finest representation of real life Dakar in a video game," said Paulo J. Games, the game's director.
So, what can you expect? Well, Dakar 18 is a simulation that's promising realism so it doesn't look like it will be an easy ride. In terms of the rides themselves, vehicles and drivers in the Dakar 2018 rally will be faithfully recreated for the game, giving you the chance to race cars, bikes, trucks, quads and SxS vehicles for the official teams through its vast open world. It will feature single-player, plus online and offline multiplayer.
Marc Coma, Sporting Director of Dakar, is looking forward to the event becoming a video game. ”Dakar will not be a 2 weeks adventure anymore, the fans will have the opportunity to live it all year long by playing at this new game,” he said.
Andre Villas Boas can practise in his spare time.
