Hamburg-born, Berlin-based musician David August's music sits in the electronic section of vinyl stores, but pigeonholing the 25-year-old as a knob-twiddler would be missing the point entirely. August is as versatile as he is prolific, swinging from deep house to quasi-classical releases and from live performances in top clubs to classical auditoriums.
August's Boiler Room live set has apparently been seen by more than 2.5 million people and he recently performed with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin for three sold-out nights. No wonder Resident Advisor voted him one of their best live acts in 2014 and 2015. But August thrives, too, in the more cerebral studio environment. He is studying a PHD in sound design, after all.
On his latest release J.B.Y./Ouvert – his first for Ninja Tune offshoot Counter Records – August blends subterranean rave music with the sort of treated piano, hissing ambience and foreboding mood music synonymous with Erased Tapes' stable of artists. The result is thrilling, as August's tunes drop into deep, murky ravines before exploding with bright euphoria. If you like Nils Frahm and Jon Hopkins, then August is your man.
With his live reputation going before him – and before he releases his next progression in sound – we called him in for a special live session for Red Bull Music's showcase series See.Hear.Now.
Get to know David August a little better and check out exclusive performances of Ouvert (from 1m46s) and J.B.Y. (10m41s) in the player above. This video contains flashing lights.
