Fallout 76’s world is filled with plenty of loot to uncover, from guitar swords to alien blasters, and valuable scrap to antique weaponry. You’ll never be short on things to find while wandering the wasteland, but not every item is simply lying out in the open, waiting to be discovered. Knowing where to find large quantities of a particular material is something that takes some time to figure out.
Not to worry though, as we’ve done the work for you. The following guide will point you towards some of the best loot in Fallout 76, as well as places to farm scrap to build new structures, weapon and armour mods, and other useful equipment.
The first entry on this list isn’t necessarily a great weapon, but it sure is fun. The Alien Blaster is an item that can be found in a bucket in one of the toxic pools to the north of the map, inside the Toxic Valley. The problem is, though, it doesn’t come with any ammo. So, in order to use it, you’ll have to do some more exploring first.
Head to the Mount Blair Train Yard, climb to the roof of the nearby building, and unlock the door at the top. You’ll need to have at least level 2 lockpicking in order to do this. Then, once you’re inside, steal the Dome 2 key from one of the lockers behind the door and fast travel to the Black Mountain Ordnance Works, which are located west of Vault 76.
From here, head east and you’ll soon find the Dome 2 security door nestled among some rocks. Open it and loot the Alien Blaster ammo on the surgical table and the nearby plan that lets you modify the gun to accept fusion cells as replacement ammunition. Now you’re good to go!
There are three musical instruments in the game that double as melee weapons – the Guitar Sword, the Death Tambo, and the War Drum. You can find each of these in the Sons of Dane Compound, in the music hall up on the stage. However, it is first come, first served, meaning you’ll have to act quickly in order to pick them up before anyone else.
Thankfully, there are also a few other locations where they can spawn. Though these aren’t necessarily static, and randomise between a few different items, depending on the server. The Death Tambo spawns in a small camp hidden beneath the blocked railway tracks east of Harper’s Ferry. You can find the Guitar Sword outside of an unmarked shack east of Vault 76, next to a rocking chair. And the War Drum can appear in the Abandoned Bog Town, on a counter top inside one of the buildings.
While not necessarily a legendary weapon, the 50 Cal Machine Gun is a great item to have in your inventory early on in the game. It is also incredibly easy to find. All you need to do is follow the road east from Clarksburg, and you’ll come across a truck with the machine gun perched on the back of it.
Not too far away from the last location, you can also come across another excellent weapon, the Marksman Sniper Rifle. Head south from the truck and you should see an icon for the Pioneer Scout Overlook. Climb to the top and you’ll find a dead body there. Next to it, on the floor, is the Marksman Sniper Rifle for you to grab.
The Black Powder Pistol and Black Powder Rifle are two extremely powerful civil war-era weapons. They take a long time to reload between firing, but can dispose of enemies with only one or two blasts.
To find them, you’ll want to head to the Philippi Battlefield Cemetery, along the road south of Prickett’s Fort. Clear the area and try to avoid the patrolling Yao Guai. Then, once the coast is clear, head inside the nearby museum and open the individual display cases to loot both the pistol and the rifle, as well as some ammunition. You can also find a civil-war era style get-up here too.
There are a few places that are good for farming lead in Fallout 76, but the best we’ve found is the Charleston Fire Department.
What you want to do is clear out your inventory, then head inside the building, and go to the gym that is located there. You’ll find plenty of weights and barbells on the floor that you can pick up and scrap. This will provide around 15-20 lead with every trip, making it an excellent way to stock up quickly.
As for rubber farming, Grafton is the area where you will want to travel to. There is a building in the north-east part of the town where you will find a sports hall filled with voting machines. Here you will be able to collect a bunch of kickballs and basketballs that you can scrap for around 80 rubber at a time.
Running short on springs? Then you’ll want to travel over to Sugar Grove in the Savage Divide region. The area has plenty of clipboards and fans, which you can break down for springs. The only downside, however, is that high-level robots patrol the area. So make sure to bring some decent weapons with you if you want to get out alive. A single trip here can net you up to 40 springs.
You’ll also be able to gather a lot of screws at Sugar Grove (roughly around 20), but there is also another location worth looting too. The Charleston Capitol Building in The Forest region contains tons of typewriters that you can steal and break down across its multiple floors. The area is usually filled with ghouls, super mutants, or scorched, so pack a few good weapons and try not to get overwhelmed in the hallways. You can usually leave with about 20 screws from every visit.
To farm aluminium, go to the Pleasant Valley Ski Resort at the Top of the World and take the ski poles outside the main entrance. When broken down, these will give you two aluminium per ski pole, and there’s roughly six or seven that spawn, so you’ll be able to collect a significant amount over time if you keep reloading into a new server.
Plastic is another building material that you’ll constantly be running short on. Whenever your supplies start to become low, head over to Morgantown High School and loot the plastic pumpkins you find scattered around the area. You’ll get two plastic from each one and there’s around 17 to be found. So it’s a pretty effective way of gathering plastic, without going to a ton of effort.
