For anyone who's played FIFA on a regular basis over the past decade, the names Esswein, Doumbia and Ibarbo are enough to send chills down the spine. These are the players who have gone down in FIFA folklore as the 'most overpowered' of their respective titles, causing mayhem on the virtual pitch with their outstanding in-game abilities.
As you'd expect, FIFA 18 has unearthed its own selection of overpowered players over the past few months, too. These stars arguably perform more effectively than their ratings suggest and, in some cases, are the best players available for their positions, regardless of stats. We've rounded up our picks of the bunch below.
1. Asmir Begović (GK, Bournemouth)

Historically, Bournemouth keeper Asmir Begović has never been one of FIFA's top goalkeepers, despite boasting impressive stats. That's all changed this year, though, with the Bosnia and Herzegovina star proving one of the most popular picks for Premier League Ultimate Team sides. He benefits from a bunch of great attributes, including an 82 in reflexes, but his performances surpass his rating on the pitch, and he's also available on the cheap – around 2000 coins on the FUT transfer market.
2. Tiémoué Bakayoko (CDM, Chelsea)
If you've played the FUT Champions mode in Ultimate Team at least a few times this year, you'll probably have come across Chelsea midfielder Tiémoué Bakayoko. He's the go-to for many players on a budget, being available for around 2000 coins on a regular basis. He may not have enjoyed the best season in real life, but the 82-rated CDM is a powerhouse in defensive roles, proving incredibly tough to outmuscle, as well as benefiting from superb tackling, stamina and aggression abilities.
3. Alex Sandro (LB, Juventus)

There are a selection of fantastic left-backs among FIFA 18's ranks, but arguably none better than Juventus' Alex Sandro. It's not entirely unexpected – the Brazil international benefits from an 86 base rating in Ultimate Team, and it's his stamina, strength and speed that make him particularly lethal in-game. The only real downside is that you need around 30-40k FUT coins to sign him on the transfer market, but in the meantime, you can always opt for the similarly overpowered Jordan Lukaku instead.
4. Sergej Milinković-Savić (CM, Lazio)
Lazio midfielder Milinković-Savić is the epitome of balance in FIFA 18, proving effective in almost every area of his game. That makes him a particularly reliable choice in a CM role, and even his lowest-rated item in Ultimate Team (80) can do a fantastic job for the majority of teams in the centre of the park. The Bosnia international is so good that he's often compared to Paul Pogba for his efficiency in-game, despite showcasing less impressive stats on paper.
5. Anthony Martial (LM, Manchester United)
Martial has immense pace

France international and Manchester United left-midfielder Anthony Martial is one of FIFA 18's most effective Premier League talents, taking advantage of his immense pace and dribbling skills to run riot down the wing. The differences between the FIFA 17 and FIFA 18 versions of his stats are actually quite minimal, but Martial feels like he's reached another level on the pitch this year, terrorising defences with his sheer speed, masterful ball control and improved shooting abilities.
6. Alejandro Gómez (CF, Atalanta)
You only need to look at Argentinian forward Alejandro Gomez' stats to see why he's so lethal in FUT 18. He's pacy, with a 94 in acceleration being complemented by 86 sprint speed, while his dribbling is even more impressive, including 94 balance, 92 agility and 87 ball control attributes. Gomez' shooting actually lags behind a little in the high 70s (his finishing stat clocks in at 78), but don't be fooled – this Atalanta CF scores goals for fun in FIFA 18.
7. Gabriel Jesus (ST, Manchester City)

Back in FIFA 17, Man City and Brazil star Gabriel Jesus was one of the best bargain picks available in Ultimate Team. Just a year later, Jesus' in-game ability has skyrocketed further, with his base 78 rating being upgraded to an 83 along the way. His improved abilities make him one of the best strikers in all of FIFA 18, taking advantage of incredible pace, dribbling and shooting abilities for the relatively low price of just under 15k on the FUT transfer market.
