5 hardcore FIFA 19 Career Mode challenges you should try

Looking to score a new gig on FIFA 19? These hardcore Career Mode challenges will provide some of the sternest tests that world football has to offer.
When embarking on a new career in FIFA 19, there’s always the temptation to play as your favourite team in the hope of securing the success that’s always eluded them in real life. Or, if you’re fortunate enough to support a big club, emulating their latest and greatest feats.
Selecting one of football’s global superpowers, like Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Paris Saint Germain, is equally tempting. The chance to play at stadiums such as the Camp Nou or the Allianz Arena with players like Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski at your disposal is an opportunity many fans simply cannot resist.
But FIFA 19 offers a choice of more than 700 playable teams, so isn’t it about time you stepped out of your comfort zone and tried your hand at something a little more challenging? Here are some of the toughest tests Career Mode has to offer.
1. Guide Forest Green Rovers to cup glory
Difficulty setting: Professional
Vegan enthusiasts Forest Green Rovers defied all expectations when they fought their way into the Football League in 2017, and this season, they’re doing it all over again by challenging for promotion to League One. Whatever secret ingredient they’re putting in those Quorn pies is clearly doing the business.
The Green Army has achieved its share of underdog feats of late, but can you pull off the ultimate one by guiding them to either League Cup or FA Cup glory during your first season? You won’t find many teams on FIFA 19’s English football pyramid with humbler stats than 65 for attack, 64 for midfield and 65 for defence.
It takes a real FIFA magician to complete the giant killing spree required to beat this challenge, and you’ll have to do all of that with a transfer budget of just £1.3 million!
Top tip: That transfer kitty won’t stretch very far, but try to invest it in pacy wingers, as speed is what Rovers lack. Adding some momentum to the flanks will help provide the ammunition for main striker Reuben Reid to fire away.
2. Win a double treble with Rangers
Difficulty setting: Legendary
Rangers’ journey back towards the upper echelons of Scottish football has been bumpier than any of their supporters were bargaining for. Not only did they fail to clear the Championship hurdle at the first attempt, the Glasgow giants haven’t won any major honours since their return to the top flight in 2016, and have had to watch on with envy while bitter rivals Celtic eat silverware for breakfast.
Last season, the Hoops completed an unprecedented double treble and, although they have lost manager Brendan Rodgers to Leicester, he left them eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. On FIFA 19, you can't do a double treble of a domestic trophies as they're not all in the game, so we're going to make it even harder for you – can you win the league and cup in Scotland, as well as a European trophy. For two years in a row?
The domestic trophies shouldn't be totally out of the question considering the Gers have one of the strongest squads north of the border, with an overall value of £32.5 million, but the European trophy will be tougher – and you have to do it on Legendary.
Top tip: The Gers have plenty of creativity in midfield and free-scoring Colombian hitman Alfredo Morelos will take care of your goals, so you should invest your £6.9 million transfer kitty in some steely central defenders.
3. Steer Dundalk to European success
Difficulty setting: Professional
Change your name to Jack if you can pull this one off, because winning European silverware with an Irish outfit involves one legendary giant-slaying feat after another.
League of Ireland champions Dundalk have a proud history on the continent. In 2016, they became the first side from the Emerald Isle to reach the playoff phase of the Champions League qualifiers. The group stage proved a bridge too far for the Lilywhites but they went on to defy expectations in the Europa League that season, becoming the first Irish team to win and draw in its group stage, with impressive results against Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar.
Taking Dundalk all the way to a continental trophy is the sort of underdog feat we’ll never see in real life, but on FIFA 19, it’s a Career Mode challenge to really separate the casual armchair players from the future esports professionals.
Top tip: Take your chances! You might only create a couple of them per match when taking on a team from La Liga, Serie A or the Premier League, so putting them away is imperative. Investing time into those training mini-games can pay off here.
4. Win the Bundesliga with FC Kaiserslautern within three seasons
Difficulty setting: World Class
Historically speaking, FC Kaiserslautern are one of Germany’s most successful teams. They play in a 50,000-capacity stadium, have won everything on the domestic front, and in 1999, reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Fast forward one decade, though, and the Red Devils are what you’d call a sleeping giant, now plying their trade in 3. Liga, the third tier of German football.
There are FIFA 19 players who love a project, so here’s a three-season one: restore Kaiserslautern’s glory days by guiding them to back-to-back promotions followed by an odds-defying Bundesliga triumph. You’ll start out with one of the strongest 3. Liga squads at your disposal, but this one obviously gets trickier from there.
Top tip: Don’t forget to train your players. You’re playing the long game here, so make sure you’re training five squad members per week. That way, they’ll be much better equipped for the step up to a higher division the following season.
5. Conquer China with Beijing Renhe
Difficulty setting: Legendary
The Chinese Super League is one of the fastest growing competitions in world football, but it’s never been the most balanced. You’ve got famous players like Paulinho and Oscar up against relatively unknown domestic players.
The Chinese top flight is all about the Benjamins too, so it comes as no surprise that £612 million-rated Beijing Goan, and Guangzhou, with their £48 million transfer war chest, are two of the best Asian club sides on FIFA 19.
Winning the league with either one of those Goliaths is nothing to write home about, even on the brutal difficulty settings, but if you can do it with Beijing Renhe, a team with a transfer budget of just £2.8 million, you’re officially a FIFA wizard.
Top tip: You’re up against China’s elite with a squad worth only £14 million and limited funds to expand it. Improvements are needed, so start researching wonderkids and loan rangers - these are your best bets for reinforcements.
