It is pretty simple to pick a goalkeeper in FIFA games. Unlike in other positions, where you might pick for a player with high pace over another with a higher OVR rating, the best keepers have good stats for all the essential attributes – diving, handling, positioning, reflexes and kicking.
However, it is handy to know who FIFA 19's top 20 goalkeepers are, even though you only need two for your team on matchday. After all, not everyone will be able to afford to have David De Gea in their first XI from the off.
So here we have goalkeepers who are rated highly enough to be amongst the FIFA 19 top 100 right down to shot-stoppers who are rated at 84.
You can also look beyond this list as there will be players who are overpowered. For example, Asmír Begovic's performances surpassed his rating in FIFA 18, so look out for players like that when FIFA 19 comes out on September 28. Here's the top 20:
FIFA 19 Goalkeepers – The 20 best players
- David De Gea (91)
- Manuel Neuer (90)
- Thibaut Courtois (90)
- Jan Oblak (90)
- Marc-André ter Stegen (89)
- Gianluigi Buffon (88)
- Samir Handanović (88)
- Hugo Lloris (88)
- Keylor Navas (87)
- Ederson (86)
- Alisson (85)
- Stéphane Ruffier (84)
- Anthony Lopes (84)
- Wojciech Szczęsny (84)
- Mattia Perin (84)
- Lukáš Hrádecký (84)
- Kasper Schmeichel (84)
- Bernd Leno (84)
- Neto (84)
- Sergio Asenjo (84)
Who should you pick in your FIFA Ultimate Team?
Well, David De Gea – with 90 diving, 94 reflexes, 88 positioning and 85 handling – is the obvious choice. He'll be expensive though. He's got the best reflexes in this list, but he hasn't got the best kick for a keeper – that honour goes to Manuel Neuer (91), who also has the top diving stat (91). Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak has the best handling, the experienced Buffon has the best positioning (90) and Hugo Lloris has the top speed.
Lloris would be a great choice if you can't afford De Gea. Rated at 86, he combines that speed with a whopping 92 reflexes, 88 diving, 88 reflexes and 83 positioning.
There are some interesting narratives in here, too. Man City keeper Ederson is rated higher than Alisson, who was the world's most expensive keeper until Chelsea signed Kepa. The new Chelsea number one isn't in this list, but Bernt Leno – who is currently being kept out of the Arsenal side by Petr Cech – makes it in. There's no place for England's number one Jordan Pickford either.
In fact, Pickford was one of the players who we suggested could do with a ratings boost in FIFA 19. Check out the list of keepers that we thought should be rated higher in the new game below. We were right about some of them!
1. Jordan Pickford (Everton)
24-year-old Pickford had his share of doubters when named as England’s first choice keeper for the 2018 World Cup, but any concerns were quickly diminished. The Everton star proved dominant between the sticks, guiding the Three Lions to a semi-final spot for the first time since Italia 90. Even so, Pickford’s FUT 18 rating has never gone beyond the 82-rated mark, so he looks nailed-on for an upgrade in a few month's time.
2. Ralf Fährmann (Schalke 04)
Schalke 04’s Ralf Fährmann captained his side to a second-place finish in the 17/18 Bundesliga season, and was rewarded for his efforts with an extended contract in the summer. He’s known for being overpowered in FUT 18, proving almost as dominant as the 91-rated David de Gea despite his 84 OVR. He’s certainly a great keeper in-game, but we’d like to see a higher rating for the talented German regardless.
3. Keylor Navas (Real Madrid)
Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas continues to defy his critics – the Real Madrid star cementing his place as one of the top goalkeepers in world football. Last season brought more success for the 31-year-old as he was named in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season after victory over Liverpool in the final. His base rating remains at just 85 in FUT 18, but his handful of in-form upgrades suggest an increase is forthcoming.
4. Alisson (AS Roma)
Another keeper who found his way into the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season was Roma’s Alisson, later featuring for Brazil in this year’s World Cup. The 25-year-old enjoyed a superb year with the Giallorossi last season, and his Champions League last-16 performance against Shakhtar Donetsk earned him great acclaim back in February. Bizarrely, his base rating remains at just 80 in FUT 18, so expect a big boost for the Brazilian.
5. Danijel Subašić (AS Monaco)
Following an outstanding 16/17 season in which he was named Ligue 1’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Subašić impressed once more in 17/18, making crucial saves in two penalty shoot-outs and against England in the World Cup knockout stages. The Croatian has an 85 OVR in FUT 18, but given his excellent year as well as his 86-rated FUT World Cup item, all signs point to a ratings increase for the 33-year-old in the near future.
6. Łukasz Fabiańksi (West Ham)
Despite being relegated with Premier League side Swansea last season, Poland’s Łukasz Fabiańksi still impressed, receiving the team’s Player of the Season award as a result. He’ll be lining up for West Ham next season after making a £7m switch in the summer, and given his impressive form combined with his low 80-rated item in FUT 18, an upgrade could still be on the cards for the veteran shot-stopper in FIFA 19.
7. Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid)
For the past three years, Slovenian keeper Jan Oblak has received the La Liga Zamora Trophy (presumably not named after Bobby) for his performances in the Spanish top flight. He topped it off in 17/18 by winning the Europa League with Atlético Madrid, grabbing a clean sheet against Marseille in the final. Despite his already impressive 88 overall rating in FUT 18, Oblak’s continued dominance suggests he may receive an improved rating in FIFA 19 Ultimate Team.
8. Ederson (Man City)
Brazilian keeper Ederson played a big part in lifting last season’s Premier League title with Manchester City, finishing with 16 clean sheets. Since his £35m move from Benfica last summer, the 24-year-old has boasted a range of in-form upgrades in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team, including an 87 Team of the Week item back in March. As a result, Ederson’s base rating should benefit from a fairly hefty boost in FUT 19.
