Sydney-based singer-songwriter Kota Banks is one of Australia's most hotly tipped up-and-coming pop acts – but on new track Fiorentina, she's harking back to her teenage years in Florence. Exploring her Italian heritage, the carefree pop banger touches on hazy romance, kickabouts on the football field, and evenings stretched out on the couch playing FIFA.
The track also features a cameo from North London grime artist Capo Lee, who recorded his verse at Red Bull Studios London with the track's producer, Swick. Watch the video, directed by Gold Coast creatives Jáen Collective, below.
Says Kota:
"Fiorentina is me flexing/repping my Italian heritage. It actually started as a joke after promising my producer, Swick, I'd write a song about FIFA but, as we worked on it, I realised how much I resonated with it culturally and how much I needed a song on the project that evoked Italian flavour. There’s also an Italian version – I think people who don’t speak the language will still understand it, as the vibe is infectious and self-explanatory. My nonna gets down to it when she cooks!"
"Shooting the music video was such a fun experience – I got to collaborate with the Jáen Collective, who are the funniest, most talented blokes. We thought a soccer theme would resonate with the then ongoing FIFA World Cup. The clip portrays the essence of the song so accurately!"
Fiorentina is taken from Kota's mixtape PRIZE. Listen to it here
