In 2016, UK production duo Snakehips, best known for the Tinashe and Chance The Rapper hit All My Friends, took a foray away from future sounds into vintage R'n'B. The gorgeous voice grooving along with the jazzy brass on the track Falling was that of young London singer Malika.
Malika was raised on '90s American R'n'B, with special props to Destiny's Child, Lauryn Hill and Mary J Blige. Her voice is girly, but deeply soulful and never more expressive than when she's singing – as she so often is – about being helplessly in her lover's power.
Snakehips had already produced Malika's debut single, Put It On Me, and recently shared production and co-writer credits on her Songs About C EP with the likes of DaVinche (Kano, Tinchy Stryder) and Ian Dench (who has regularly written for Beyoncé).
Here, Malika performs Lua (Love You Again), which forms part of the EP's narrative about her relationship with her ex and is filled with sweet yearning, and the bubbly, keys-lifted former single I Live.
