Gaming
You create your team before taking your riders from the Red Bull Rookies Cup all the way up to MotoGP Championship. That's the plan anyway – you see, MotoGP 17 can be quite challenging to begin with, whether you're in Team Manager mode, racing as Marc Márquez, Dani Pedrosa, or any of this season's riders.
So to help you get off to a winning start, we have some top MotoGP 17 tips direct from the game's lead designer Matteo Pezzotti. Check them out, get on the track, and who knows? If you get really good, you could compete in theMotoGP 17 eSports Championship.
1. Make it personal
Personalising your gaming experience in terms of choosing the right difficulty level and editing the game’s physics is an important part of MotoGP 17.
First of all, you can choose whether to use Standard, Semi Pro or Pro physics. Each simulation level is designed to appeal to a different kind of rider – Standard physics, for instance, helps you keep things under control, while Pro physics are a bit wilder and leave you completely free to risk everything.
You can also set a series of riding aids designed to help riders of all abilities experience the feeling of real racing without having to focus too much on the pad.
All kinds of riding aids are available, from the on-track 'spine' designed to show riders the best trajectory, to the rewind function that helps even the best skip back and correct the odd error. There are also riding aids that act directly on the bike, such as joint brakes used to brake both wheels with a single button.
Players can also impact the race itself by the activating or deactivating of tyre wear and damages. In short, play can be tailored to suit pretty much your every whim.
2. Get the right set up
It is usually the rider who makes the difference, but if a motorcycle is not built around the man who rides it, it’s almost impossible to get on the podium.
As a result, the best approach is to drive a few laps of each track to find the best set up for the bike, allowing you to put in the best possible performance. Suspensions, for instance, are tricky beasts to set up – you have to decide the preload, stiffness, compression damping and rebound damping of the front and rear suspensions in order to have a stable, agile and fast ride.
Obviously, it’s is not enough just to adjust suspensions – even the handlebar plays a key role in the stability of the bike, and you should always adjust the rake and trail. Then, depending on the length of the track, it’s always better to edit individual gears and the final gear ratio.
That’s not everything, either – remember that even the brakes and tyres play a fundamental role in each race, so choose brakes and tyres that suit your riding style.
3. Choose your categories
Naturally, MotoGP 17 plays host to a hell of a lot of different bikes – besides the four official 2017 categories, the game includes four historical classes.
The best way to master all the different bikes is to take on the Rider Career game mode, allowing you to make your debut in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and race towards the MotoGP premier class, all after joining the Moto2 and the Moto3 classes.
This game mode is the perfect way to improve your riding skills because it makes you take on completely different types of bikes, starting from the lower classes where engines have less power but where the starting grid is always filled with riders and competition, up to MotoGP, where you will finally be able to ride the most powerful bikes in the world.
4. Grow as a rider and as a manager
Besides the classic Rider Career, MotoGP 17 also offers a brand new Managerial Career. In this mode you take on two roles, both managing all the activities of the team and serving as one of the six riders who takes to the track in team colours every Sunday.
The most important tip we can give you here is to pay attention to the needs of your team. For example, you need credits to develop engines, organise marketing activities and instruct your riders to participate in TV spots to increase your money.
Also, if your riders are dropping the ball during the races, try organising training sessions to help improve their physical condition. Flex those muscles, in every sense.
5. There’s a whole world out there!
The true test for any great MotoGP 17 rider is to challenge other players from around the world in one of the online game modes. This is where the level of competition truly soars.
When you feel ready, the brand new MotoGP eSport Championship awaits for you. This brand new mode gives you the chance to compete in a series of Qualification Challenges, unlocking an exclusive Final Event taking place in Valencia during the middle of an official MotoGP Grand Prix.
Only the best on the globe will make it this far, but with a BMW M240i car up for grabs as the top prize, it’s a goal worth aiming for.
MotoGP 17 is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
