Speak to anyone who attended RAGE back in the late '80s – a list of names that includes Goldie and Carl Cox – and you'll be able to tell by the look in their eyes that this was a club that changed lives. Founded in 1988 as acid house was sweeping across the UK, the Thursday night party pioneered a sleekly futuristic, breakbeat-laden take on the sound – at first known as hardcore, and at later stages of evolution, known as jungle or drum'n'bass. Literally, a long and creative strain of UK dance music started right here.
Thirty years on, founders Fabio and Grooverider have been hymning the club's seismic impact on UK music – first through this year's 30 Years Of Rage compilation, and now with a live event. On Sunday 8 December, RAGE returns to its original home, London's Heaven Under The Arches, for a massive three-room blow out featuring a plethora of rave and jungle veterans, including a live set from Shades Of Rhythm, original RAGE resident Trevor Fung, Jumpin Jack Frost and Kenny Ken, and of course Fabio and Grooverider reaching for the original heaters.
Now you can also watch Fabio and Grooverider's new mini-documentary about the impact of RAGE, told from some of the big names who underwent a rave revelation at the club – from Goldie to DJ Storm. Watch it exclusively in the player above, then read on as Fabio and Grooverider share their reasons for bringing RAGE back to life...
What's it been like, celebrating 30 years of RAGE? I'm sure there has been a lot of reminiscence...
It's been great – but no surprises, really. RAGE has lived with us all this time. The memories are vivid and it's been great celebrating and paying homage to the club night that birthed jungle and d'n'b. During the promo for the album and the event at Heaven, it's been amazing seeing and speaking to so many people who remember Rage and were influenced by it. Also can't believe so many people still have their Rage membership cards!
We're looking forward to going back to where it all started
How did RAGE change things? What impact did the club have on the UK club scene and the music – both at the time and in the years following?
RAGE changed dance music forever. We channeled some of that acid energy but pitted it against the new and exciting sounds emanating from Belgium, Amsterdam, Detroit, Sheffield, Essex and Hackney – and in turn we created a new style. Not many club nights can say that have created a genre that has been going for nearly three decades.
Return To Rage sees Rage return to London's Heaven, where the night began. Is it exciting to get the old gang back together – and anything about the night that you are particularly looking forward to?
The response has been amazing! We're looking forward to going back to where it all started and hopefully bringing back that vibe we used to inspire. The DJs have been planning their sets for months, everyone's really excited! Looking forward to seeing so many people that we haven't seen for decades. It's going to be very special.
RETURN TO RAGE comes to London's Heaven on Sunday 8 December. Buy tickets
