This defensive operator can be extremely dangerous and is able to wipe out any potential threats in an instant: here’s how to play her but also how to avoid falling into her traps.
Frost has probably the most lethal defensive gadget in the game. Whenever she is in play, every window and entrance pose a threat to attackers. Frost is easy to be effective with, but hard to master, and because every map has a few perfect spots for her spring-loaded traps, she can be played on every map.
So, should you want to hunt down your enemies across any map, or learn how to avoid being instantly incapacitated by this operator, this guide will provide you with tips and tricks to help you carry out either task.
What's the deal with Frost?
Tina Lin Tsang, codename Frost, is a 2 speed, 2 armour operator who patiently waits for attackers to fall helplessly into her traps. She is responsible for punishing operators whenever they are off-guard and for successfully delaying the enemies’ advance.
When playing Frost you should definitely be patient as attackers slowly gain ground: playing as Frost involves being patient and alert so that you can quickly react when your gadgets catch prey. As Frost's traps instantly down an attacker, you can use it to quickly sweep up extra kills or even use the downed operator as bait to try and bait in more attackers.
Frost’s gadget and ability
Frost’s special ability is her Welcome Mat —otherwise designated as the Sterling Mk2 LHT—. Far from being welcoming, this trap will knock down any enemy as soon as it’s stepped on. Once an attacker steps on it, they are put into a DBNO state and immobilised; the attacker will remain in DBNO (dead but not out) state and become an easy kill for any defender; if no one comes to his aid within a minute, then it’s round over for your unlucky foe, which adds extra pressure for attackers to try and recover him.
While being in this ‘trapped’ state, operators are immobile and will remain injured until either dead or revived by an ally, if lucky. If there is only one attacker remaining and he steps on a mat then the situation changes: the match will be automatically over and Frost will be granted a kill for that last helpless opponent.
Take note: someone getting snared in the Welcome Mat cannot be saved by either Doc’s Stim Pistol or Finka’s Adrenaline Surge. The only way to escape a mat is to have another teammate close enough to help out.
Frost loadout and gadgets
Primary
What you should carry for Frost depends on your game style: if you’re looking to stalk your enemies and wait for them to step on your devices from a distance, then you should go with the 9mm C1. Add the extra barrel attachment if you want to do some extra ranged damage, and try to avoid using your laser at all costs to avoid being easily detected. The other option would be the Super 90, a powerful shotgun also useful as a breaching device, for destruction, and for close-range engagements.
Secondary
Only a single gun available here, the MK1. Use it especially to take out enemy drones, claymores or other traps quietly with an attached suppressor to give you freedom of movement.
Gadgets
Frost has access to either a bulletproof camera or a deployable shield. The shield can be used not only to protect an operator from incoming rounds but also to hide traps behind. Besides, it can also help you block doorways and delay an attacker’s entrance to a particular room or site.
Regarding the bulletproof camera, it provides your whole team with valuable aid: everyone in your party will have access to this gadget. Nevertheless, consider the shield is a better match for this particular defender.
Last but not least: remember setting up reinforcements, mats and gadgets will take some time, so as a Frost you will need to move fast and get everything in place before the preparation phase is over.
Frost hints and tips
Welcome Mats are easy to deploy and can be placed anywhere as long as the surface is flat and there is enough space to hold it open. They should be placed in areas that make them hard to spot, such as below windows or on stairway landings (for enemies coming up the stairs and who are probably aiming sights up). Also, if the map in which you are playing happens to have any vertical ladders around, a great spot to place a mat would be right on top of it, as these tend to be unavoidable.
It might also be a good idea to place a mat in some random place a bit further away from the objective, as attackers tend to be more careful when closer to sites and not that much when entering buildings from an entry point away from the main targets.
When placing a trap far away from the objective in order to catch a lone wolf off-guard, remember you should stay alert, either to finish off that attacker quickly or to take advantage of the situation: if the round is at an early stage other attackers will quite possibly come to help their downed ally. Try to hold a safe position, be aware of your surroundings so as to avoid being flanked, and eliminate any opponent that tries to help the operator in need. This way, Frost’s mat will not only mean game over for an attacker who was roaming alone but also act as bait to make others join that same fate.
You will find her traps to be surprisingly effective, especially in lower ranks. When playing as Frost you should always consider playing the waiting game and use cameras to your advantage. Welcome Mats always pose a threat and mean a delay for any attacker. When stepped on, this unique gadget makes a very identifiable sound that notifies every defender nearby. Regarding Frost herself, she receives a points notification in the game feed for injuring an opponent so you’ll never miss a good catch.
When playing as a team, do keep in mind some operators work really well together. In this case, Frost’s Welcome Mats are a great combination when used with Lesion’s GU mines. Let him drop one of his needles right next to a mat and if an attacker happens to get trapped, the GU mine will be automatically triggered, resulting in your opponent’s instant death. Nevertheless, to prevent operators from interfering with your traps, avoid placing them beneath doors or windows which have Kapkan’s EDD (Entry denial device), as your gadget will be destroyed by those when triggered. Despite not being used that much in higher ranks, Frost means great entertainment for the team she’s in, and won’t disappoint you if you use her wisely.
Mind the trap: countering Frost
Whenever a match starts and a Frost is in play, you should immediately start checking every doorstep, window or corridor before running into the action. Her loadout is solid and her special ability is probably one of the most unforgiving in the game. The key to counter this defensive operator is extreme caution and good communication with your teammates.
If you happen to spot a mat right under a window you are about to enter while rappelling, then take your time and find the right angle to shatter it, as mats are easily destroyed with just a couple of bullets. Should that not be possible then just keep shooting at the floor while entering the building. Same situation whenever you are vaulting over a shield and there is a mat right behind it: aim at the floor while vaulting and get rid of it before you touch down.
Bear in mind an operator might be holding that particular angle and could catch you off-guard. Always drone before entering any new room in the map: spot enemies and traps before it’s too late. Be extremely careful when attacking alone or if you are the only player remaining vs. the enemy defenders: no one will be able to pick you if you fall into the hands of this lethal huntress.
