Rainbow Six Siege's Year 5 content is nearly upon us, with Operation Void Edge planned to release on March 10, although Ubisoft are remaining as tight-lipped as ever about when the new operators and the numerous changes attached to Void Edge will be jumping from the technical test server to the live game.
However, Red Bull has had plenty of time to get to grips with the new content, playing it on both the TTS and out in Montreal at Ubisoft's offices, and with Alex "Z1ronic" Dalgaard, we're here to deliver tips that will help you get the most out of these new operators as soon as you can pick them.
New attacker: Iana
Armour 2/ Speed 2
The newest addition to the R6 attacking line up is Iana. She is an intel focused operator with her main ability being her gadget the Gemini Replicator, which casts a hologram of yourself that can be used to basically drone for “free”. The Gemini Replicator recharges over time allowing you to gather more intel than any other attacker.
How to get the most out of Iana
In the prep phase make sure to set up your first drone to easily cover a flank - this helps the team tons, and you can instead use your Replicator to check the rooms ahead - the holograms will get destroyed if they take a single point of damage or get caught by a mute jammer so be careful when using it, as the recharging time is longer if your drone is destroyed than if it simply times out.
It is also only active for a limited amount of time so be sure to plan ahead - Remember with the M/M meta - (Mute / Mozzie) Iana can pass right over a Mozzie pest but not a mute jammer.
Trick the enemy
The hologram makes a noise when activated and once active it acts as a normal playable character, producing footsteps, vault sounds and everything an actual playable character would do. Use this to your advantage, you can activate the Replicator and instantly deactivate it to make the defenders think it's just a hologram pushing the hallway and assume you're still in the next room. This can give you a small window of opportunity if you act fast.
Remember not to be too predictable, as this trick works on misdirection. If you're using this on a team and its successful, they'll be ready for it in the game's latter rounds. No hassle though, as you can try to flank with the hologram, leaning and strafing as if you're trying to line up shots. This will ensure that your opponents have to respect and worry about your hologram, and they'll never know whether Iana is real or a hologram.
Fear cameras
Do remember that cameras will not ping the Hologram. This means if the enemy has a camera on you, they can work out you're not the real deal. Heat-sensitive devices like the Bulletproof Camera or Maestro's Evil Eye won't pick up a heat signature from the hologram, which the Evil Eye will also be able to zap your double easily, adding insult to injury.
If you see an enemy on a camera, there's a good chance they've tried to ping you and know that your ghostly double of Iana is the drone they were looking for, and your ruse has been rumbled.
Bait the C4
You can have some success running to the default plant spots and crouching in cover as if you're about to plant. This will force defenders who don't want to have to contend with an early plant to try and push you back, which can bring them into the sights of your waiting teammates.
Alternatively, they might try to deal with you using utility like Smoke's gas grenades or a C4, which trades your recharging hologram for some of their non-recharging utility, a net win for your team, and useful when the plant actually goes down later in the round.
Be warned though, this works like a dream in this early pre-season stage, but players may get wise to it later in the season. Try it now, while it's viable, and see what you can get away with.
You're on point
Playing Iana? You have two main jobs: to assist with safely clearing roamers, and in checking objective sites and rooms that need to be droned. Always push deep into the room with your drone in case anyone follows, this will pull the aim of the defender further from the "real" operators, and could even allow your team to get a refrag without anyone actually dying, which is the best kind of trade we can think of.
Don't forget to use your drones either - just because you can check rooms for free with your hologram doesn't mean that a well-placed drone on the flank isn't valuable, especially if you can hold a good angle or sneak one onto the site.
New defender: Oryx
Armour 2/ Speed 2
New defender Oryx can feel like the Kool-Aid man on defence, tearing through walls and leaping into hatches with aplomb. This monster from Jordan has no gadgets beyond his willingness to plow into objects at high speed, but he's able to tear through objects, barricades and even walls at high speed, although he'll lose 10hp every time he smashes through a wall with his face.
This means there are two schools of thought with Oryx. You can use him to make all the rotation routes on the site in the prep phase before hitting him with one shot from Doc's stim pistol to get him back to 100hp, or you can use him to remove furniture and other breakable things that normally take quite a bit of utility to clear out. As an example Oryx can clear the entire bar and all the small tables on the top floor of Kafe without taking any damage.
Head trauma
The Remah Dash only hurts Oryx if he hits a wall - barricades, Castle sheets and tables etc don't cause any damage to him - so feel free to go straight through a barricade to quickly escape or suprise an unsuspecting attacker.
King of Roam
With the choice of a sidearm shotgun in the form of the Bailiff 410 & your Ramah Dash you can quickly get around the entire map - change floors or running through walls are child play for the attacker but don't get too complacent - jumping up a hatch is audible and can get you instantly killed if the attackers placed a claymore.
Even the best players in the world are going to have to quickly rethink things when Oryx blasts through the nearest wall with a submachine gun, so be sure to hit and run as many times as possible to keep attackers guessing. As the only defensive operator that can leap up hatches, he has a unique ability to keep defenders guessing as to whether a floor is truly clear, so be sure to use this to keep them guessing.
Look left and right before crossing the road
With Oryx it can be fun to use the Remah Dash to just move a little quicker down a hallway or doing run outs etc - but remember that Airjabs will throw you further, Trax will instantly stop you and claymores will kill. All the defender gadgets work pretty much the same on Oryx, but the effects and the danger they pose are amplified when you're moving through the map like a runaway train.
Hulk Smash
Ever been in a 1v1 with an extended Montagne? Oryx has you covered, as he can smack attackers to the ground, including those wielding a shield.
This often isn't worth it, as any attacker with reflexes can mash the melee button and end the fight by knifing you as you close the distance. However, against a Montagne with his shield fully extended, you can floor him outright, letting your team get a clean shot at him and anyone else that might have been hiding out behind his blast door of a shield.
