Born and raised in Washington D.C., Chris Matthews was looking toward a career in basketball by age eight, when his father dubbed him 'Lethal Shooter'.
"If it wasn’t for my parents, Jeffrey and Stephanie Winslow, I probably wouldn’t have taken basketball so serious,” Chris says. “Playing at places like Rudolph Playground in D.C. made me understand what it takes to make it on the basketball court and gave me grit and toughness.”
A record-breaking shooter
Chris played collegiate ball at Washington State and then St. Bonaventure, where he demolished almost every shooting record. When he wasn't picked up in the NBA, he made a career abroad. After seven years and several injuries, Chris decided to move on from his playing career in 2016.
Among the first to reach out for his professional coaching services were Kevin Séraphin and Dwight Howard and, as of today, Chris has trained players from almost every NBA team, as well as top players from the WNBA. Through the art of shooting, Chris has been able to share his knowledge with everyone, everywhere.
“Like anything, if you want to get better, it’s okay to have someone teach you how. Because no person is perfect,” he says.
A new challenge
Chris works just as hard at his coaching as he worked to become Lethal Shooter, tailoring his teaching style to each player. When the sport went quiet in 2020, Chris took his creative energy to Instagram, developing custom hoops that challenged him in new ways of shooting.
Besides training athletes, he helps rappers, entertainers and others who appreciate basketball culture and are serious about building their own hoop skills.
“Basketball, rap, music, fashion… all of it coexists together,” Chris says. “There are so many artists, and I don’t just mean rappers, I mean painters and actors and different people who just want to get better.”
Inspiring the next generation
Chris also tries to give back every day and he is especially respected for his mentorship with youth through camps and outreach programs.
No matter who he’s working with, a key part of Chris’s message is to, “stay locked in.” He explains: “That means through adversity, through hard times, just continue to focus on your goal. Everybody has to work on their craft every single day.”
