Growing up just outside of Stuttgart, Germany, Leo Neugebauer was introduced to athletics at a young age. He was just six when he first started training and it wasn’t long before his natural talent shone through. Asked to try several different events to determine which discipline suited him best, he excelled in all of them. It was clear from that moment that he was born to be a decathlete.
Blessed with a rare combination of immense power and explosive speed, Neugebauer’s athletic prowess secured him a move to the United States after being accepted on a sports scholarship at the University of Texas in 2019.
Making a name for himself at the collegiate level
It was while competing in collegiate sports that Neugebauer developed a reputation as a future superstar. A charismatic athlete with a flair for showmanship, his performances improved year on year and in 2022 he made his debut at the World Athletics Championships, finishing in 10th place overall in the decathlon (which consists of 10 track and field events).
One year later, he set a new collegiate record for the decathlon when competing in the NCAA Championships. Earning personal bests in seven of the ten events, his tally of 8,836 points was a world-leading score, set a new German national record and would have been enough to earn him gold at the previous year’s World Championships.
Now clear that he could become one of the greats in the world in the decathlon, Neugebauer continued to excel in college sports in early 2024, winning the heptathlon (seven track and field events) at the NCAA Indoor Championships and the decathlon at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships.
Arriving on the world stage
In the summer, he made his mark on the world stage, winning a silver medal at the Paris Games and earning Germany's first Olympic decathlon medal since 1996. One year later, he upgraded his silver to gold, emerging victorious at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Amassing a huge total of 8,804 points, his performance made headlines around the world. As did his celebrations, with Neugebauer initially being helped into a wheelchair after lying exhausted on the ground after his final 1,500m run, before leaping out of his seat when realising he had won gold.
Neugebauer added another major title in August 2026, winning European decathlon gold in Birmingham. He amassed 8,611 points to hold off fellow German Niklas Kaul by just 38 points, adding the European crown to his world title and Olympic silver medal.
It’s not just his performances in the decathlon that have earned Neugebauer fans around the world. His personality also shines through, with the German athlete gaining a huge following on social media where he showcases everything from his training and recovery sessions to his love for food and travel adventures.
With Olympic silver, world gold and now a European title to his name, Neugebauer has firmly established himself among the leading figures in global athletics – with plenty still to come.
