The summer season is a great time of year – long, hot days, afternoon BBQs on the deck, Christmas parties in the sunshine – but it also has a dark side. As the seasons change, winter swells move north, onshore winds start blowing and the quality of waves plummets.
But that’s okay! Because it’s the holiday season – school’s out, work shuts down and you finally have the freedom to take a surf trip.
Where in the world should you head this Christmas season? Let us give you a few ideas... and if that's not enough, what about a bit of photographic inspiration?

Micronesia

For those of you who are a bit more intrepid, Micronesia could be just the ticket. With world class waves like P-Pass, and the perfect time of year for swell, you can't go wrong. Find a remote bungalow and relax in pure Polynesian bliss.

Samoa

Unless you're a big wave fanatic, visiting Samoa in the dry season isn't a great idea. The wet season, however, will offer up empty lineups and medium sized surf. Coming with a crowd, maybe even a non-surfer or two? Your travel companions won't complain in Samoa... between the stunning landscape and unique culture, it's a travel haven for everyone this Christmas.

New Zealand

It might seem counterintuitive to head south in the summer, but New Zealand in the summer is a great time of year for surfers. Quiet lineups, as warm as the water gets, and guaranteed fun and endless waves. Hire a camper, cook a Christmas feast on the beach and enjoy the south in summer.

Hawaii

Don't mind a 10-hour plane flight? Hop the pond across the Pacific and enjoy what many call the best time of year in Hawaii. Whether it's Maui, The Big Island, Oahu or any of the other islands, you'll find waves and sunshine on The Rock. An idyllic holiday for surfers, and non-surfers, alike.

Western Australia
