To secure those all-important clean sheets in FIFA 19 Ultimate Team, you’ll require centre-backs with excellent pace, physical and defensive skills. Fortunately, there are plenty of defenders that possess these qualities, and many are available at a low cost.
If you’re looking for affordable centre-backs that can put a stop to even the most prolific strikers, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve picked out 10 outstanding central defenders that can be acquired for under 10k coins on the FUT 19 transfer market.
1. Eric Bailly (2k)
The 82-rated Eric Bailly is a superb defender in FUT 19, boasting immense strength and jumping stats. The Manchester United centre-back – who is available for just 2k on the transfer market (or slightly more for his Champions League variant) – boasts a range of impressive defensive stats, including 84 interceptions, 83 sliding tackles and 82 standing tackles. An Ivory Coast international, he's a perfect first XI or substitute option for anyone looking to build an EPL side in FUT 19.
2. Nacho Fernández (4k)
This Real Madrid centre-back has excellent defensive stats, including standing and sliding tackles (86 and 85 respectively). You’ll also get a fair bit of pace out of the Spain international (78 sprint speed), while both his jumping and heading accuracy are excellent, too. Expect to pay around 4k on the market for the 29-year-old, who enjoys high defensive work rates and even sports a four-star weak foot ability.
3. Jérémy Mathieu (1k)
You’ll only need to fork out around 1k coins on the transfer market for Sporting CP’s Jérémy Mathieu, who is severely under-priced for his talent. The 6ft 2" centre-back is fantastic in defence, highlighted by his 86 marking and 84 standing tackle stats, but it’s his incredible strength (89) that makes him so effective at the back. Also, look out for his surprisingly great attributes in curve (82) and shot power (80) when bursting forward.
4. David Luiz (5k)
If you happen to have missed out on David Luiz’s expensive flashback variant in FUT 19, his standard 83-rated item remains highly proficient. The Chelsea star boasts some formidable interceptions (85) and aggressiveness (85) stats, while all of his defensive-related attributes are generally impressive. He’s not the paciest centre-back on our list in terms of stats, but he tends to outperform them on the pitch, making him a great acquisition.
5. Marc Bartra (2k)
Real Betis’s Marc Bartra fits perfectly alongside the aforementioned Nacho Fernández in a FUT 19 La Liga side. Barta benefits from his outstanding 89 jumping ability in both defensive and attacking scenarios, assisted by an 82 in heading accuracy. He’s a great defender in general due to his 86 interceptions and 82 standing tackle stats, while his ball control skills are impressively adept (80), allowing him to play out from the back with ease.
6. Clément Lenglet (1.5k)
The 82-rated Clément Lenglet comes highly recommended due his balanced defensive, physical and pace-related stats. The Barcelona defender’s most notable attribute is his marking, which stands at an impressive 89, while his four-star weak foot can prove useful when passing around the defence. Lenglet only costs around 2k on the FUT 19 transfer market, and, in our experience, works best as a reliable second choice centre-back to bring off the sub's bench.
7. Dávinson Sánchez (8k)
Although he’s the most expensive entry on our list, Tottenham Hotspur’s Dávinson Sánchez is more than worth the outlay. The 84-rated item is often used by players in Division Rivals and FUT Champions as it packs high stats in sliding tackles (88), aggression (87) and marking (84). The item’s price has dropped heavily in recent months, making Sánchez a no-brainer for the majority of EPL teams.
8. Kevin Vogt (1.5k)
27-year-old Kevin Vogt’s overall rating only clocks in at the 80 mark, but he far outperforms that statistic on the pitch. He’s also the quickest defender on this list, with his 84 sprint speed making him particularly tough to outpace at the back. The 6ft 4" Bundesliga talent won’t be outmuscled easily due to his high strength (85) and aggression (81) stats, and he’s also excellent when employing a long ball tactic, sporting an 83 in long passing.
9. Presnel Kimpembe (5k)
We recently listed PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe as one of FIFA 19’s most overpowered players, as he's outstanding at centre-back in FUT 19. The 23-year-old, who has transformed from a 60-rated prospect to an 83-rated star in just three years, boasts excellent pace, defensive and physical stats combined with a high defensive work rate. He’ll cost you around 5k coins on the transfer market, and you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck.
10. Chris Smalling (1k)
In past years, Man Utd centre-back Smalling has often been hailed as one of FIFA Ultimate Team’s top defenders. He’s gone somewhat under the radar this time around, but make no mistake – the 81-rated centre-back remains fantastic in FUT 19. His balanced defensive stats and 87 strength make him a formidable presence at the back, while his 82-rated Champions League item improves his attributes further for just a few extra thousand coins.
