See Garrett McNamara riding the biggest wave ever
The American surfer has smashed a world record by taming a 30m big wave in Nazaré, Portugal.

The 44-year-old achieved the feat at the ZON North Canyon Project at Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, where an underwater canyon generates incredibly huge waves. At 30m (90ft), the wave breaks the previous official world record of the 77ft breaker surfed by Mike Parsons, in Cortes Bay, California, in 2008.
McNamara is a seasoned big-wave hunter, having previous surfed a huge wave generated by an Alaskan glacier, and when the monster in Portugal began to swell, McNamara was quickly towed into its path by a jetski – and somehow even managed to film it from his own surfboard as he survived the break to tell the tale.
“I feel so blessed and honoured to have been invited to explore this canyon and its special town,” he commented. “The waves here are such a mystery.”
