The hunt is on!

With season 5, Apex Legends has introduced a new type of content for players to dive into. These are Player vs AI Hunts that unlock each week as the season progresses. Each of these hunts come with cosmetic loot, as well as a text-based chapter in the slowly unravelling mystery behind the artifact that new legend Loba is trying to acquire.

What are quests?

Quests are new to season 5 and follows the story of the legends as they work for Loba to uncover an artifact of unknown purpose. This comes with an intriguing text-based story as the legends try to work out Loba’s goals and motivation. These are released weekly on a Tuesday at 6pm BST.

To unlock the quests you must play matches of Apex in either duos, trios, or competitive. In those matches you need to find treasure packs which can only be found by opening supply bins and picking up the pack. The packs are not guaranteed to spawn but the rates seem high enough that you will find one within the first two matches.
The packs are limited to one a day, but if you have fallen behind then you can purchase packs up to the previous day. For example, if you had never picked up a pack, on day seven of the season you would be able to buy six packs. There will be a total of forty-five packs to get over the course of the ninety days of the season. Each pack will reward you with a small amount of crafting metals, experience, or Apex Packs.

The First Piece - released on May 19, 2020

The first part of the Broken Ghost quest line that is available to players is “The First Piece”. Once you have a total of five treasure packs, collected or bought, you will be able to select the mission from the quests tab and be entered into a lobby screen. Here you can invite up to two friends and ready up to play. If your friends haven’t unlocked the quest they will still be able to play, but will not receive any of the rewards and will be required to redo the mission once they do have enough treasure packs.
Once all players have readied up you will be dropped into the usual legends selection screen, but with some differences. First, Loba and Revenant will be locked off from the selections available to players. This makes sense as they are the two rivals involved in the hunt for the Broken Ghost, and wouldn’t be involving the rest of the Legends if they could deal with it themselves. The second change will be familiar to those who have played some of the limited-time modes Apex has offered over the past few months. Below the Legend tiles on the select screen you will see a loadout of equipment that you will start the mission with. For this first mission, all Legends will have a P2020 pistol and a Mozambique shotgun, as well as armour and some medical supplies. This suggests that future missions may have more unique loadouts that encourage certain characters to be used, and this could add to the story in interesting ways.

Once you have selected your legend you will be transported via dropship into the Kings Canyon Night map with a brief introduction from Loba as to your objectives: Get in, extract the artifact, get out, with only eight minutes to do it. It’s a simple and linear mission, with most of the story being given in the reward after you complete it, but it sets up a nice framework for future missions, with more choices for approach, and hopefully more difficult objectives.
First you need to head through the artillery tunnel which will be familiar to anyone who has played Kings Canyon before. Along the way you will encounter the usual supply bins and be able to get small upgrades for your starting guns. Very quickly you will run into the enemies for the mission: Prowlers, Dog-like enemies first seen in the Titanfall series and making their second appearance in Apex Legends, having previously been fought in Bloodhound’s Trial on World’s Edge. They have a small pool of health, hit hard, and can be easily dispatched by either starting gun once upgraded with the Hammerpoint Rounds Hop-up.
You now need to make your way through to Artillery Base, picking up alternative weapons and armour on route, as well as fighting off Prowlers. At the base you will find that someone has been here before you and attempted to extract the artifact. However, it seems the Prowlers overwhelmed them, and you are free to set up your own drill. While you are defending the drill you will be attacked by Shadow Prowlers that have the effect of Revenant’s Death Totem. Whether these are creations of Revenant himself, or if Hammond has an immortal guard dog division is unclear, but shooting them is still effective so keep them clear of the drill.
Once the extraction is complete the last step is to get to the dropship and evacuate. You will have ninety seconds to do this, thankfully the drop ship is not far, and only requires you to climb up the warehouse you passed on the way in. You’ll be assaulted by Shadow Prowlers the whole way so make sure to keep shooting. If your friend gets knocked down, or doesn’t manage to climb fast enough, as long as you get to the ship it will be counted as a success.

The First Piece Rewards

After you have completed the mission you will receive the first part of the artifact, a weapon charm and a new text based slice of story.
The artifact piece is the Gemini-XG core, and is one of the nine parts that need to be collected to complete the artifact.
The charm is a massive Sapphire, likely something Loba has stolen and given to you as a reward.
The story involved the Legends discussing what they did, and what the next step is going forward. These are lovely little pieces of story that both build the narrative that Respawn is building for this season, as well and giving each legend more character, whether it’s Bangalore’s no-nonsense mindset, Mirage’s daydreamy lack of focus, or Octane’s complete obliviousness, each Legend gets a little deeper with every quest completed.

A Legend Falls - released on May 26, 2020

Another week, another treasure hunt in Apex Legends season 5's A Broken Ghost quest. This time the Legends take on "A Legend Falls" with just ten minutes to locate and excavate the next important artifact, the occipital hub.
While it's admittedly a little more involved than the prior quest, it's still not a particularly taxing adventure, and even lone wolves should be able to battle through unscathed – just ensure you grab enough ammo and supplies along the way.
You join the quest up high, kicking off the action from the top of the Cage. All Legends spawn with the same (pretty lousy) loadout: white armour, white bag, a single syringe and shield cell, one grenade, a Triple Take, and a P2020.
While few Legends would put either gun at the top of their must-have list, the good news is that they're pretty well kitted out with Legendary mods and great sights.
For every four Legends in your fireteam, you'll have to take out four Prowlers on the ground below, the same unsettling AI enemies we met in last week's quest and World's Edge's Bloodhound's Trials. Once you've sniped them from the relative safety of The Cage, some further Prowlers will spawn behind you. Kill 'em, jump down, and head to the bunker, making sure to check the crates before you leave – there's better armour and supplies up for grabs.
There are telltale signs that Wattson is somewhere nearby, but for now, she's MIA. Dispatch the remaining Prowlers and enter the bunker by carefully removing Wattson's protective fences – given she's not technically a teammate, they will damage you if you don't remove them first.

You'll find Wattson downed inside, but – sadly – you've arrived too late, and there's no time to revive her. That's okay, though – a Legend never lets a good crisis go to waste. Pillage her deathbox, grab her shiny golden helmet, and head down the stairs, but not before you grab those fully-loaded Eva shotguns, of course.
There's a temptation to head right on over to the main entrance and fling it open, but there's no such shortcut here. The main doors have been firmly locked, and to escape you'll need to activate three exit panels.
Prowlers will keep charging you here, so don't hang about. Breach the three interior doors to get into the rooms behind them – there's two on the same level as you and one below – making sure you kill the Prowlers inside, activate the panel, and loot before moving on. Rinse and repeat three times, then shoot down Wattson's last remaining defensive fence.

Make sure you take a good look around as you go, though; there are Legendary shields and some tasty weapons up for grabs, including a golden R-301, Peacekeeper, Spitfire, and Devotion.
Immediately outside the bunker door, you'll be directed to activate a drill to locate, and excavate, the second hidden artifact. Your job is to keep the Prowlers at bay while the digger does its thing.
The good news is that it's a pretty speedy process, and before long, you'll be prompted to return to it, grab the artifact, and skedaddle. The bad news is your clock has now stopped and regardless of how much time you had left at this point, you now have a single minute to GTFO.
Head straight forward, Legend. A ship's ready and waiting for you and all you have to do is reach the sweet spot beneath it. Once you do, you can breathe a sigh of relief – it's all over for now.

A Legend Falls rewards

Your rewards for making it out alive? The Epic weapon charm Ruby, chapter two of the story, 'The Detached Chaperone', and the prized artifact itself, of course.
