Riyan comes from the state of Assam, which hasn’t traditionally been a powerhouse of cricketing talent. But Riyan has been representing his state for many years and has been one of the brightest cricketing prospects to emerge from the state in many decades.
He made his first-class debut for Assam in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy season; he’d already been picked for the 2016-17 Inter State Twenty-20 Tournament before that and had represented India in the 2017 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup.
Riyan was part of the India squad that won the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Following that success he broke through the domestic ranks by finishing as Assam’s leading run-scorer in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The performances brought him to the limelight and he was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for the 2019 season. He finished the season with a fifty, becoming the youngest half centurion in the history of the world’s biggest T20 franchise league.
Riyan is an effective all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls leg break for the Rajasthan Royals.
