Born in 1999 to a skateboarding father, Yuto Horigome was exposed to skate culture right from the very earliest stages of his life and became a regular fixture at Tokyo’s Murasaki Sports Skatepark.
From an early age, there was no denying Yuto's talent. At just 18, like many of the world's top prospects, he made a move to skateboarding's epicentre in California to pursue his dream.
Yuto's breakthrough came in 2017 when he finally found himself on the podium. What followed was a meteoric rise, winning at Street League, X-Games and Tampa Pro, which marked his ascent, and his reputation grew in lockstep with his relentlessly progressive talent.
Contests may fuel the careers of today's skateboarders, but it's through video in which true legacy is cemented. Alongside his dominance in competitions, Yuto has been productive on the filming front as well, releasing video parts for wheel sponsor Spitfire (2021), April Skateboards (2022) and Nike SB (2024), with viewerships running from 1m to 3m per release: stratospheric numbers in a content-saturated age.
The ultimate prize emerged in 2020, when Yuto became an Olympic gold medallist in his hometown of Tokyo, establishing his status as the standout figure in the global skateboarding scene.
The path to Paris 2024 was far from straightforward. Yuto secured his place by the narrowest of margins, only to deliver an outstanding comeback with a groundbreaking backside 270 nollie to bluntslide on a handrail - still unmatched by any other skater. With millions watching around the world, Yuto sealed his status as the world's premier skateboarder by delivering an incredible performance.
Having claimed every major title and captivated millions, Yuto Horigome now stands at the pinnacle of his sport.
That is just how good Yuto Horigome is at skateboarding. Where he goes from here isn't just a question for the skateboarding world, but it is something that the entire nation of Japan will watch unfold.
