Red Bull Kite Fight 2019 was the fifth edition of the competitive kite fighting championship in India. The competition looks to find the best kite flyer in a sporting makeover to the traditional Indian hobby celebrated.
Vishal Sen from Jaipur took the plaudits, earning himself the title of India’s best kite fighter in 2019. Rohan Meena took the second place standing to make it a 1-2 for Jaipur residents at the fifth edition of Red Bull Kite Fight. Dipu Surti from Vadodara claimed third spot at the national final which was held one day before the country celebrates the festival of Makar Sankranti.
The championship featured four city qualifiers – Surat and Vadodara on 5th January, Jaipur on 6th January, and Ahmedabad on 13th January – before the national final put the best kite flyers up against each other.
A total of 1130 participants entered the tournament across the four city qualifiers. Three finalists were selected from each city to compete in the national final in Ahmedabad on 13th January.
Each of the 12 finalists were given five different types of kites to prove themselves to be the best kite flyer in a last-man-standing survival format.
Vishal Sen emerged as the undisputed champion of Red Bull Kite Fight 2019, claiming bragging rights and perfecting his skills in the days leading up to Makar Sankranti.
“It feels great to be a part of an event like Red Bull Kite Fight, that gives importance to the auspicious festival of Makar Sankranti. The competition was intense, but I am delighted to win the fifth edition of Red Bull Kite Fight 2019,” Vishal said after receiving his trophy.
